Rear bumper removal

Morning Colin,

If you do a google search for ‘A2OC rear bumper removal’ you will see there has been plenty of threads covering this over the years.

All results are good but choose one which you understand/makes the most sense to you. Also look at the tips to seal the boot space/luggage area vents with some silicone whilst you’re there.

Kind regards,

Tom

Jack up the rear of the car,

Remove the wheel arch liner on both sides

Undo the 2 torx screws holding the bumper on the inside of the arch

Undo the 8 torx screws along the underside of the bumper

Remove the black cover at the top of the bumper between the boot seal and the top of the bumper. It pulls off and you WILL break some of the clips.

Down inside the recess you will see a number of torx screws, remove them all.

Remove the tail lights by unbolting them from the back of the unit insode the pull off cover.

This will leave the bumper free to be removed.

You will need to start to remove the bumper from around the wheel arch. This can be achieved by gently pulling from the recess of the tail light and the underside of the back bumper. A back and fore motion will free it off.

Two vids here but not all applicable to you but will give you a visualisation.

Watch from 3:09 though the video is enjoyble but not all applicable to you.

All the best.

You do not need to remove the wheel arch liners. It is sufficient to just losen the back part and fold that aside while using an extension rod to unscrew the hidden nuts behind.

Another tip is also to remove taillights and use a spanner or similar to push and release the bumper from the backside

I've also seen people spray WD40 into the gaps, not sure what it acheaves and if Steve does it.

Have never needed to and you don't need to use trim removal tools as per the first video above and I've removed more rear bumpers than I can remember. That video makes it look a lot harder than it needs to be. With practice you can remove a rear bumper in about 25 minutes including jacking.

Yes, that's how I do it, but for a first timer I suggested removing the arch liners to make life easier on him.

You'll also find a magnet on a stick very useful for removing the inside screws on the bumper edges.

Cheers as always. A2 got bumped whilst parking and the boot is full of water again so going to pull the rear bumper off and resell the vents…..
