Rear seat won’t lock.

Hi

I have a four seater and my rear offside seat back won’t lock in position.
The handle which you pull up to release the seat remains up. You can see the red on the handle to let you know it’s not locked and the metal latch in the mechanism is in the open position.
I can’t work out a way to release this to allow the seat to lock. It’s just failed it’s MOT on this problem.
Does anyone have any ideas how to sort this.
Thanks
Dougster.

There are threads on this BUT in my experience fold the seat over, kneel on the back of the seat and pull the handle up. With mint it's because the locking pins aren't quite right

This thread has lots more

Try folding the seat and kneeling on it - whilst doing that jump up and down on your knees until you hear a click!

This happened with mine a week ago - the balls on the spring-loaded anchor piece on the base on one side had got stuck in the exposed position so the seat was also very slightly off vertical. As stated above, with the seatback folded forwards and the false floor of the boot removed, I sat on the rear edge of the seatback and pulled the lower release handle upwards - a couple of bounces on the edge with the handle lifted and there was a click whereupon the anchor latched properly. Then it was possible to lift the seatback and get the upper handle and latch to engage properly.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I’ll try these tips when I’m reunited with the car on Monday and let you know how I get on.

Take the seat out for the retest.

One of mine is stubborn, I did what was suggested above but also, try folding the other seat first so the sticky one can move more freely.

Excellent tip that. When I’ve had an issue in the past, removing the other seat altogether to give more ‘wiggle room’ has definitely tended to help. All about getting the balls in the right place and hearing those two lovely clicks 😊

I tried all the tips and bounced in the seat and took the opposite seat out but no matter what I tried it didn’t lock into place. I took the seat apart on the side where the locking mechanism is and found a small part had sheared off. I didn’t take photos but I found a photo in the forum which showed the exact damage mine had. I hope. I’ve screen shot the photo and hop the OP doesn’t mind me using it.

I’ve managed to operated the mechanism manually and it’s locked into position so it’s going for it’s MOT tomorrow and I’ll see how it gets on. It should pass as it’s locked in the up position now.
Does anyone know what the broken piece does.
