Rear wheel bearings

First question, has anyone had the rear wheel bearings go faulty, and second question, what noise was it.

On very smooth roads (very rare in essex and surrounding) I can hear a rumbling noise. Its a deep rumble noise, and appears to be coming from the rear.

Thanks in advance
Alan

I had a similar problem that got solved once i changed my tires. One of them was a little distorted and created a bearing type sound.
Try to change your wheels with your second set (summer/winter) if you have them, and see if the problem persists. It's an easy DIY first step.

I thought I had a rear wheel bearing going too, had a grumbling rumbling noise which was worse when you went round right hand corners, but as with trex, it disappeared when I replaced my tyres.

I also had the same problem. Replaced the NSR tyre (noise was coming from that side) and the noise disappered. The garage that did the work advised me that this is a very common problem with A2s.

I did have a wheel bearing which needed replacing. It made a typical wheelbearing noise though - a speed-dependent rumble from the rear, initially imperceptible, and gradually worsening over months. Tyre noise will normally change with the road surface, which usually helps differentiate the two. You can also jack up the rear and spin the wheel...

With a wheelbearing you can watch and wait until you are sure (after you have checked it's not a tyre about to give up the ghost, because that may be dangerous).

Dealer charged £200. Next one I'll do myself! Let's hope there isn't a need.
