Red Brake (!) Light + Engine Managment On

Hello All,
Please can you help?

I brought an Audi A2 virtually 3 weeks ago from a 2nd hand garage in Birmingham 51 plate with just under 47,000 miles and its only been on the road 2 days in 3 weeks.

When picked up from the garage the RED (!) Brake Warning light was flashing and bleeping and I took the car back to the garage I brought it from to be told it would go away. Silly me believed the garage and drove car home.

When I booked the car in for a service the Audi specialist told me I need new brake discs / pads and wiring pin which meant the red light went out. He also did other work for me including new cambelt/ longlife service/lambda sensor and the car seemed great when I picked it up and drove it back to West London at a cost of £1200. However, when idling in heavy traffic 2 days later the EPC & engine management light came on although the car drove fine. At lunchtime I checked again and this time the EPC light stayed off but the red brake light (!) was back on and so too was the amber engine management light. I took the car back to the Audi specialist in Coventry not the garage I had brought it from.

The Audi specialist confirmed that they had checked all the wiring and no fault found so they were sure it was the abs control unit not communicating and sent my unit off for ecu repair, even though no abs warning light was on. However, today (Friday 12th Feb ) the Audi specialist confirm that no fault has been found by the 3rd party and the unit will be back with them on Monday 15th Feb and they will again re-test. I am getting increasingly worried and anxious that they won’t be able to fix and I have brought a problem car (although the engine / gearbox seem fine to me). The Audi specialist said the unit may now miraculously work when put back in as this has happened in the past but I think they could be running out of ideas and cannot guarantee a fix. They said if it doesn’t work it may be worth just putting a new re-furb abs control unit in and seeing if that works? (if not they won’t charge me £680 for a refurbished unit).

My question is do you guys have any idea what the problem may be ? can I drive the car safely with the red light & engine management light being on ? the Audi specialist said my abs may not work in emergency but no problem with car brakes / engine etc. The garage in Birmingham reluctantly said they will take car back and fix but I do not believe them, I think they will just disconnect / cut a wire so the light goes out. Any advice would be most welcome as I love the car (preferred it so much over A-class & Vauxhall Meriva) but now am very worried and don’t really know what to do ? please please please advise ? many thanks.

Hi I cant help much with the tec stuff I'm Afraid. But did the garage give you and error codes? I guess they must have done a scan. If you could post these it would help the tec guys on here to give you more advice. If they did not do a scan. There are quite a few people on here who have the kit to do a scan for you.

Hope this helps

David

Thankyou for your reply riverlad.

I will assess the situation on Monday and get the error codes from the specialist for sure. Hopefully someone can help me then. Fingers crossed.

If it helps you could pop over to see me and I can pull the error codes for you - I'm in Richmond.

hello Dan b

thankyou for your kind offer and if the problem isn't resolved I would like to pop over and see you in Richmond when suits you. The garage will get the abs unit back from 3rd party on Monday so I will assess then , as its likely I won't be able to pick the car up and bring back to Ashford - Middlesex until the weekend of 20th Feb.
