release cable

Greetings folks,
My 04 Reg A2 has the usual service hatch fo oil and washer fluid but the cable does not fully withdraw the locking catch.There is adjustment on the service hatch flap but I don't think that will help. Is there a way to easily shorten the cable? And is that at the release lever end or at the locking peg?

I ended up drill in new holes and moving the catch. My requirement was mainly caused by replacement of the flat grille with the slatted one. The catch was not in 100% the same place so I had to re-align the release mechanism.
