Removing a passenger seat !

Morning all

so due to the current ” situation “ I find myself at a loose end , and need to find temporary employment for the next 8 weeks or until we return back to something ” normal ,

I managed to land a job acting as a self employed multi drop courier........ the time frame / contract duration , makes buying a van “ draft “ as the car is insured for unlimited mileage, with goods in transit etc from my current role

the rear seats , spare wheel , and upper boot floor are all coming out to free up spare , reduce weight and max up space in the A2 , I will have around 300kg , and 200 packets in the car at the start of the day and expect to rack up around 50 miles per day , or 3k for the contract

being fairly handy , sheet ply wood will extend the boot floor to make a flat load deck, which will sides and a bulk head to stop stuff moving forward , and I would like to carry this though into the front area for more space

any body know how to bypass the passenger air bag , via the body loom plug ...

I would imagine it will require some sort of resistor and using a plug from another seat to wire it up, but I’m terrible with electrics so better to wait for more replies.

Others may know better but. The first time I removed the passenger seat and disconnected the airbag, I was unaware of the advice to disconnect the battery until the seat was re installed and airbag re-connected. Like you I did it for additional load capacity. The only consequence was the airbag light came on when re connected and had to be reset with VAGCOM.
I know of no other complications.

Hi Geoff

Just to confirm , did the air bag light stay off while the seat was out of the car ?

I can handle the warning light coming on when the seat is reconnected , I just don’t want to be driving around it annoying me while I am driving !

regards Mark

I cannot be 100% sure if the light was on or not. I suspect it was. I only realised it had logged an error with the cpu when the light was on after re-connection..
Timmus is the one who could confirm this
Geoff

I am fairly sure the air bag warning will be on from the moment the ignition is first turned without the seat. The startup integrity check will notice the missing air bag and not turn the light off after a second or two as it normally does with an fault free system.

Andy

Andrew is correct. With the passenger seat removed, the airbag warning light will come on from the moment the ignition is first turned. It will stay on until the airbag module is reset with VCDS. Reinstalling the passenger seat and connecting its airbag will not cause the warning light to go off.

Whilst probably not officially recommended or permitted, you may be happy to drive around with the airbag warning light on. If you're involved in an accident, all connected airbags will still fire as normal.

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks Tom

my 1st day is Monday , so I will see what I have let myself in for , it’s short term and fingers crossed I don’t need to rely on this “income “ for an extended period!

it I need the space , then the seat comes out !
