Removing hub nuts - not A2

You' would need to have someone with their foot heavily on the brake, otherwise all the load will be on a few gear teeth, with inevitable results!

RAB

Thanks Rab,

The design of the one I got looks like it is braced against the wheel lugs and turns against this so there shouldn’t be any wheel movement torque.

I’ll know when I try to take it off next time.

I have had some success with stubborn wheel nuts with generous applications of HEAT to the outer areas of the nut while trying to limit the heat on the center with the threaded bolt/axle (to expand the nut on the threads) and then adding penetrating oil as it cools down. This technique requires lots of time and patience... otherwise a 6' pipe on a high quality breaker bar and socket with someone in the car standing on the brakes... If you have someone to help you, put some significant pressure on the bar, and simultaneously use a small sledge hitting on the breaker bar/socket straight towards the axle.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I can’t help feeling that there must be an easier way used by every garage. A three man team employing sledge hammers, blowtorches, scaffold bars and bouncing on poles sounds like there hasn’t been a good amount of engineering consideration in fitting hub nuts on the VW T25.

I only want to connect a new handbrake cable!

Nope!

Lifting the entire van off of the axle stands and not moving a jot.

I’m done buying tools. The mechanic will fix it - fingers crossed.

Any HGV workshop worth their salt would have that undone in seconds with an inch drive socket and heavy duty air gun............a tyre place doing HGV's would do it also.............. they use the same sort of gear........

I’m sure the tyre place 50m away could have done it no bother but there were two problems with that...

1. No MOT and the lack of handbrake makes it a ‘dangerous’ fault so illegal to drive - even on trade plates. I’m trying to replace the handbrake cables but can’t drive it to anywhere and it’s too heavy to push.

2. I’m immensely stubborn.

The van was recovered yesterday so a professional can deal with it.

I’m planning on building a little metal device to fit onto the studs and brace the torque multiplier against for next time. I WILL NOT BE DEFEATED!

A tyre place with mobile HGV service would have come to you no problem..........would have saved on recovery charges
