Removing the sump

Hi can anyone confirm whether the gearbox needs to come off to get the sump off. Audi think there is a problem with my pulse ringtrigger is faulty in some way and want to remove the gearbox and then sump to view it..
Anyone know if this can be viewed if you take out the crank sensor? Thanks

On a 1.4 TDI the sump comes off easily, couple of 17mm ? bolts holiding the strater/ bell housing a ring of bolts holding the sump (turn the engine to find the gap in the flywheel which allows you to undo the 2 bolts hidden by it ) hose clip and the dipstick i think thats all

Hi thanks for the reply. If you need to turn the engine to get the final two bolts on the flywheel end does that mean something has to be removed to get to the flywheel access e.g. is the gearbox in the way? thanks

Thanks yes I understand that the flywheel needs to be rotated, well the crank, to expose the nuts to undo. Sorry what I meant was the flywheel is encased in the engine isnt it? Is there just a cover to take off the end of the engine to expose the flywheel, thereby gaining access to the bolts via rotation of the engine? The reason for the question is Audi have told me they need to take the gearbox off in order to gain access to all of the sump bolts. It may be therefore that behind the gearbox is sandwiched the clutch/flywheel and so access to the sump bolts? Thanks

It's not encased on mine (and didn't look like it could be) you can see the bottom of the flywheel with the sump on i'll try and take a pic. wednesday ,the sump is of at the moment so i know it's possible, took me about 20mins to remove

Fab steve, that's all I need to know - its a 20 min job - Audi are trying to charge me £300 to take the sump off because they advised that the gearbox needs to come off as well. You have told me all I need to know, thanks again:D

I'll take the pic of gearbox in and sump lying next to it, show mr audi stealer that it can be done :)(so long as they didn't change the design between 2001 and 2004 )

Hi Steve
I guess the key question for tracyb is can you see the speed sensor toothed wheel clearly with the sump off ?
I've had a look at the parts diagms etc and if the inspection shows there is a problem with it, then it looks like the gearbox, flywheel and rear crank seal carrier would need to be removed for access to the toothed wheel. Worst case would be the crankshaft also needs to come out if there is not clear access when the rear crank seal carrier is removed

Cheers Spike

Yes i see your point, that could well be the case , i was just answering the question will the sump come off without removing the gearbox. pics anyway :)

Steve thanks v much for that. Yes you are right I wanted to know whether the gearbox needed to come of for inspection purposes at this stage. I have been told that if the Pulse disc does need to be replaced then the engine needs to come out, put thats stage 2 and covered under warranty albeit at just £35 an hour - what mechanic works for that!
Thanks all for your input - now to tackle Audi to tell them their job:eek:

Hi Spike, can you confirm too that just to take the sump off can be done without removal of the gearbox? The more collaborators the better

Yes, the sump can be taken off without removal of the gearbox, exactly as Steveb described. The flywheel rim does mask a couple of the sump bolts but the rim is scalloped to give access once the flywheel is rotated to the correct position.
