Anybody think its worth while on my 75bhp tdi BHC engine,it has an after market on previously replaced by previous owner,it will cost me nothing to do or replace as i have a 100cell approved metal cat,i know this 3 cyl engine likes abit of back pressure?? any comments...

Think the back pressure debate is ongoing. Tony, aka Hotstuff had a full 2.5" exhaust system fitted with De Cat and his car shifts!!.

My down pipe flexi section has just failed, so I am now going the same route, with a 2.5" and De Cat

What sort of cost is a complete 2.5" system with de-cat roughly......mine is 2001 so I imagine the exhaust isn't too far out of the end of its life in areas? also is the de-cat legal and what is the latest thoughts on whether a bigger system adds more power to a mapped tdi 75?

Generally the lower the restriction after the turbo the better however it needs to be remapped to make the most of the reduced restrictions (back pressure) otherwise the turbo can overspeed/spike.

I de-catted a VW 1.9Tdi by knocking out all the catalyst from the existing box made a big difference. Passed MOT's too.

also is the de-cat legal

Officially its not legal as the car would no longer meet the Euro emissions level shown on the type approval document. (think it was Euro3 or 4) It would still pass the very basic MOT emissions test but its possible future MOTs will include a visual check and automatic fail if the CAT has been removed.
The motoring press suggests this will definitely be the case with Diesel Particulate Filters (our cars are not fitted with them) and since the car would no longer be deemed roadworthy due to increased pollution, the modification could invalidate your insurance.

Safest thing would be to discuss the modification with your insurance company and have a system where the original CAT could be refitted if MOT tests get tougher in the future.

Now this is the view of a pensioner and I'm fairly sure if I were 40 years younger I'd ignore my own advice and do it anyway.

Cheers Spike
