Replacing Chorus on 2001 Petrol SE

Hi all.
I need a little info please.
The radio/tape sound from the speakers has been very iffy since buying the car (cuts in and out unless cranked up very loud).
I've decided to replace it, as it's likely to be the radio, and not all 4 speakers at fault.
I know there's no switched 12v to the radio, so I'm going to tap off the fat white on the 2 pin plug on the back of the climate panel.

That switched 12v will fire a relay which will switch a fat new cable from the battery connection in the passenger footwell.
The switched cable via the relay will feed a new fuse box with will in turn feed the new radio and some USB sockets/voltmeter.
The USB sockets are for carcams, phone chargers, etc.

My question relates to the rear speakers. The fronts come off the head unit, but there's no mention of the rears on the radio pinout.
What gives?

Thanks.

Hi,

if you have rear speakers, they will be driven by an external amplifier which is mounted in the driver's footwell compartment.

The head unit will provide a line out for the rear speakers as it only has a built in amplifier for the two front speakers only.

If you are installing an aftermarket head unit then you will need to provide the rear speaker amplifier with line out audio signals and a "turn on" switched positive signal to enable the amplifier when the head unit is operational.
Alternatively, if you want to power all 4 sets of speakers from the head unit's own amplifier you will need to bypass the OEM rear amplifier by running the speaker outputs to the footwell and connecting to the rear speakers there instead of the amplifier.

regards

Andrew

Thanks for the info!

Confused though! I haven't looked for the amp yet, but these are the wires on the plugs that go in to the radio.

Black 10pin
red/white - 12v battery
brown - Ground
grey/white - K-Bus (diags?)
brown - Bose (????)

Brown 10pin
red - RF+
brown/red - FR-
Blue/white - LF+
Brown/white - LF-

Red 10pin
Black/white - Tel mute

Black 20pin
Orange/blue - CAN H
Orange/brown - CAN L

I'm missing the amp turn-on wire as well as the line signals to the amp for the rear door speakers on the black 20pin plug.
Could it be that the front and rears are parallel'd together, as there appears to be no output to them?

Well, definately no amp under the drivers floor.

The aftermarket unit is fitted and working fine.
I ran a fused 12v from the battery connection in the passenger footwell to a relay, through the relay to a fusebox, and 2 cables out (1 for the radio ignition, and one for ubs sockets). The relay coil is energised by a tap off the A/C control panel.

...............so it's mostly good. I just cant figure out how the rear door speakers are supposed to get a signal.

Any ideas anyone?

Was the dodgy radio the original Audi head unit? If non OEM it sounds like it the rear amp has been stripped out and the rear speaker feeds connected somewhere you have not yet spotted. You could humour us with some images of the driver's under floor compartment.

Are you sure there are actually rear speakers under the grills? I suspect you don’t have them.

The old radio was a chorus, but knackered,
kleynie................thats actually a very good point. I assumed that because there were grilles, there were speakers under 'em.
Will check tomorrow.
