Replacing EGR

Hi All,

Need a few pointers.

1.4 TDI AMF Engine.

I need to replace the EGR. There are three socket cap heads which hold the EGR to the inlet manifold.

Access to the bottom one of these, is shrouded by the link pipe to the exhaust. So it looks like the link pipe needs to come off first.

Whats the easiest way to remove the link pipe from the EGR valve body? Access with a long extension from underneath the car?

Or am I missing something more obvious which allows access from above.

Cheers

Gary

The two Allen bolts for the link pipe are fiddly Gary and you just have to move as much as you can out of the way. The link pipe is fixed in place by a short 13mm bolt through a fixing bracket in the inlet manifold. You can't see this and will only find it by feeling round the back of the manifold. You'll not get access to all the egr bolts without removing this because it allows you to move the link pipe out of he way.

Hi there, many thanks for the reply and pointers.

I meant to follow this up sooner. In the end I did like you say fiddle! Felt like a contortionist trying to get at the two allen bolts connecting the link pipe to the bottom of the EGR.

Even tried from underneath the car with my longest extension. I could see what I wanted to get at but there is a small black bracket on the side of the tandem pump side which I assume is used for lifting the head off, this gets in the way from underneath.

Managed to get the new EGR valve fitted and im no longer getting intake oil mist spraying out of the weep hole so im happy.

I have some further issues with my car though which i'll probably post about soon when I have more idea of the fix.

Cheers

Hi Gary

Well done on getting it sorted.

How much did you pay for th new EGR Valve?

Thanks

Hi A2O2,

I bought the valve ages ago, probs nearly 2 years ago now (shows how long i've put this job off! lol)

I snapped it up as I saw it on ebay brand new for 80 quid. They do come up now and again.

Think they are much more than this from the dealers though. I did a fair bit of reading and it seems new valve is the only way to stop the leak, the rod seal isn't replaceable.

The old one was in pretty good condition for age, not really that coked up, and was fully functioning, just fed up with the mess from it.
