Retro fit remote central locking

I have a 2004 Audi A2 that didn't come from the factory with remote central locking. I am wondering if it is possible, how complicated it is and what parts would I need to complete it.

Thanks-Padraig.

Hi Padraig,

All A2s sold in the UK came with remote central locking, even the most basic ones. However, in the ROI, this wasn't the case. Just like LHD A2s sold in central Europe, those sold in the ROI did not have remote central locking as standard.

You'll need a central convenience control unit (CCCU) that supports remote central locking, plus the antenna to receive the signal from the key. Both the CCCU and the keys will need software programming.

Cheers,

Tom

Oops, thought all uk and irish ( north and south ) were the same spec. Thanks Tom from clearing that up.

So i take it that means they are already wired for remote, then with the addition of a remote enabled CCCU and the antenna on the rear bumper all that is needed are blade keys with transponders to be programmed to CCCU and immobiliser ? Sounds like a job more suitable to you Tom. Does the drivers door still have the lock unlock buttons on these cars?

Tom thanks for clearing that up-I was afraid that this might be the case!

Padraig.

So i take it that means they are already wired for remote...
When you turn a key in the door lock barrel, you're physically unlocking only the driver's door. The driver's door control module (DCM) notices that the key has been turned and thus generates a CAN instruction that is sent to all other doors, telling them to unlock.
When remote central locking is fitted, it is simply the CCCU that generates this same CAN instruction, triggered by a signal from the remote key. As such, if you wish to retrofit this function, all the wiring infrastructure is already present.

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks Tom-I will probably do it at sometime in the future, however I presume that you don't make any trips to Ireland?!

Padraig.

In the last two years, I've done A2 upgrades in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Norway and Italy. So, I see no reason not to come to Ireland.
The disadvantage for international members is that my travel costs have to be added to the cost of the work itself. However, there's a fellow club member in NI who'd perhaps like a few things retrofitting. The boat from Stranraer to Larne is free for foot passengers, so if you can meet me in Larne, I'll leave my car in Stranraer and pop across the water with all the things I need in a rucksack. This way, things needn't get too expensive.
If you're right in the south west of Ireland and cannot face driving to Larne, then it's a matter of finding cheap flights/sailings.

Cheers,

Tom

Dear Tom,

It would be remiss of me not to accept such a generous offer in accommodating me. I'll drop you a pm later.

If keyfob is lost, what is the cheapest way to get a new one?
eBay or similar(whole used keyfob under £25), key blade cut (£10, cut to photo), new transponder (around £4). Next part is to program the instrument cluster with the new key (Vcds-lite with registration costing $99). Easy to follow instructions are on A2OC (courtesy of Birchall, probably others too).

so, just occurred to me... we should take photos of our keys just incase the get lost?

what is the best way of photographing them? front and back etc etc?

and another question... if I currently only have one key... is it cheaper to "clone" my existing key to make a 2nd key?

thanks!

Close up of one side is fine, this isn't one of our keys. ? Immobiliser transponder and remote fob are easy to replace/learn by comparison to no key.

Maybe 20 years ago we were looking at buying a new VW Polo.

UK cars came as packaged specifications: back then the in ROI you bought a base car and added only those bits you wanted, which I thought was a much better way to buy.

In the end we didn’t go ahead.

In ROI a customer had that option of specifying every single option that you wanted with the "6N" Polo from 1995 to 2000. With the facelift of the"6N" Polo from 2000 it fell in with the rest of the VW range in having a "Entry"/"Trendline"/"Comfortline" (UK equivalent in think was S/Sport/SE). However you could still order options individually if you so wished as you can see from the attachment. I remember selling a Polo 1.0 litre 3dr to one of our valeters that he optioned up to IR£15,000-complete madness when you see that a GTI was only £1,000 more but he couldn't afford the insurance as he was on a provisional drivers licence.
The A2 was always sold however as a base model that you optioned up-there was no SE or Sport options.
