Guide How To Update RNS-E PU Splash Screen Guide

Evening all,

Thought it a great idea to share some of the splash screens that I’ve gathered and compiled since having the ability to customise them.

First off; to use a customised splash screen on your RNS-E PU then you must be running the custom firmware fw280 or above (only fw290 above right now which is at Beta V3). I’m running the Beta V3 and it’s great but I won’t go on about it as you can investigate it yourselves. I have mentioned the custom firmware many a time on my Project OEM Thread.

In the following posts I’ll add a picture of what’s been produced and proved to work on my own RNS-E along with an attached file. The attached file is a .bmp (bitmap) image file but the Forum software doesn’t recognise it. I will therefore change the file type to .jpg so it can be attached and downloaded. To use it you will have to change the file type from .jpg to .bmp., hope that makes sense.

To upload a custom splash screen you will need to ensure that the file name is in lower case and named as follows:

splash.bmp

No other name will be recognised by the RNS-E during the update process. The files I attached will be named correctly but you'll of course have to amend the filer type from .jpg to .bmp.

The 'splash.bmp' file must be in the root directory of the SD Card in slot 1 (left hand slot) for the RNS-E to locate it during the update process.

The update process is quick and easy to do, you first have to access the Engineering pages of the RNS-E:
  • Press the NAV button
  • Press the RETURN button until you land on the destination entry screen
  • Press and holds the top left quadrant button for 6 seconds
  • Press and hold the top right quadrant button for 6 seconds
  • The opening Engineering Page will now be displayed:
You'll now be given many options to choose from, on this occasion you simply need to do:
  • Select General by pressing the large dial inside the quadrant buttons
  • Using the same large dial scroll to Update splash
  • Your RNS-E will take a few seconds to extract the 'splash.bmp' file then automatically reboot
  • Post reboot you will see your new custom splash screen displayed
  • It will now be stored on the flash of the RNS-E and you'll be presented it each and every time you switch your ignition on.
To remove the custom splash screen you can either remove the SD card and go through the list above and put the SD Card back in after reboot or you can remove the SD Card followed by deleting the 'splash.bmp' file on you computer of choice, reinsert the SD Card and again work through the list above.

More to follow...

Continuing...

If you wish to create your own images to upload to your RNS-E PU then it must be in bitmap format and only 800 pixels by 480 pixels.

I'm by no means an expert at doing this but have recently been using Gimp which is a free image manipulation software. Its really simple to use and is far more powerful than I can get my head round right now. It can probably do so much more than I am currently capable of, time will improve my ability to produce better splash screens I'm sure!

I’m hoping that over time this thread will be full of our ideas so members can pick and choose what to display or amend to display in their RNS-E PU.

NOTE: All the files I attach will be 800 pixels by 480 pixels for the RNS-E PU with its LED screen. To use them on the earlier generation RNS-E with the LCD Scren then the dimensions must be reduced to 400 pixels by 240 pixels.

First up is the standard RNS-E PU Splash Screen with an A2 added which is from the custom firmware website:

As above but reduced:

Having it reduced gives you plenty of room to add your own twist to it like I have done in the next post.

Same image as post #5 but zoomed out along with some additions. These additions are available online, corrected to a suitable size and located on the image:

Its a little busy but its only displayed for a few seconds during boot up!

Heres the splash screen that @Seb_Gurkyh produced for me with some addition:

This is just as, if not busier than above. I'm warming to it as it shows the connectivity/ability that I have running in Project OEM with Audi factory items. Maybe slightly over the top but I'm still yet to find a nice balance of displaying additional features whilst not looking too childish.

After all the talk above about changing file types, it seems that the Forum software is really good at capturing fake/suspect file types. Therefore I am unable to add the .bmp files even with the false (.jpg) name. If you want any of the above images in the correct format then just PM me, leaving your email address and I'll ping the file(s) to you.

I have plenty more images but they do follow a similar suit with different additions/same additions in different orders.

Please do add some 'on topic' images of what you have displayed on your RNS-E.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks for this guide Tom. It really is amazing what an essentially dated piece of ICE kit can do isn’t it, especially when you add in the other components like Bose, Bluetooth etc and Stuart excellent firmware updates.

For me these Custom splash screens are the cherry on the icing on the top layer of of a most delicious multilayered cake!!! I can’t wait until one is greeting me each day when I hop in Tonka and really appreciate all your help on it. ?

Morning Erling,

I agree that these old head units can be quite capable and reasonably up to date after switching to the custom firmware.

Stuart really has done some amazing wizardry for the RNS-E community which has enabled a wider selection of revisions to fully work in the A2.

Glad you’re liking the custom splash screens. I’ll continue learning/playing with the Gimp software over time to perfect what I’m welcomed with when the ignition is switched on.

Always happy to help anyone out.

Kind regards,

Tom

Evening all,

It's been a year since I've had a play with the RNS-E Spalsh Screen and thought I'd share a few of the latest designs:

Same content as previously shown just rearranged

Not too different than above

Also been editing a LHD chrome A2 (chrome A2 logo)

Same as above but with a white A2 logo

Still not sure I'm there yet so may come back to this again in a few months.

Has anyone else been tinkering with Photoshop?

Kind regards,

Tom

That's some pretty nice work Tom but where's the pepperpot wheels?
Evening David,

I'll certainly go for a wheel swap once my editing skills improve Sir. Still in the learning phase and don't use the software that often really, it took me over an hour just to cut the aluminium A2 out of an online picture and flip it to look RHD.

Hopefully other members will share their designs to come up with a better idea that isn't over the top.

Kind regards,

Tom
