RNSE and Double DIN Dash Retrofit

That sounds very interesting Craig.

Is the road speed display activated with VCDS or are other modules/discs needed? I'd be keen to have that working.

Regards,

Matt.

Isn't this related to the extra GALA connection that is required.

I can't be sure but when I last scanned my mk2 I think I saw an error on the GALA connection.

It is electronic related / can BUS type of question and not in my skill set.

But can anyone else confirm the requirement for the GALA connection on he mk 2?

The A2 uses the GALA speed signal instead of getting the speed signal over CAN. Which, for those of us using the 'B' MK2 units, removes the need for a CAN gate.

I can confirm that the GALA speed wire setup works and that my RNSE knows the vehicle speed from the engineering menu. I had a quick flick through Craig's posts about the CAN gate and the road speed display, and he seems to have got the road speed display working after removing the CAN gate; based on dates of posts.

Hopefully Craig will be able to confirm how he managed to do it. :)

Matt.

We'd all love to know this :)
The other thing that doesn't work on my M2 RNS-E is the speed-related volume adjustment - that just simply doesn't work at all. I imagine it's related to the whole speed pulse thing.

Late to the party, but hopefully this is of use to someone...

The speed limit doesn't work because this feature is exclusive to the 193 PU units, and by the time they were released all Audi models had reverse, speed and wheel rotation data over CAN. Therefore the speed limit display was coded to expect speed over CAN, and ignores the hardwired V-Signal, even if provided. So when it doesn't get the required CAN message it refuses to display anything speed related.

Also Audi broke the processing of the GALA signal received over CAN, so GALA doesn't work correctly either after FW version 0150, even if you code the DSP menu as enabled via channel 8 GALA = 0-5.

Both these issues, and a whole load of others, fixed in my custom firmware available here.

If you require help, you're best to mail me via my contact form. If you post here it's quite possible I will not see it (as I'm not an A2 owner I don;t check here often - Sorry).

You absolute legend. Thank you 1000 times for taking the time to join the forum and post this information, and of course for solving these issues. I doff my hat to you, sir.

Bloomin' marvellous! Gotta give it a try... This would help me not getting lost in Brussels!

Will be sending mail very soon!

Welcome @pcbbc from another Mk1 TT'er!

Jeremy,

Did you have a go with the improved firmware for your RNS-E PU. I’m waiting for my new HU to arrive and quite interested in what this tweaked firmware can offer.

Kind regards,

Tom

Craigyb posted something about RNS-E camera installations a while ago

I'll see if I can find it

Cheers Spike

PS. Found one link but think there is more
There is more -

Evening,

I bought a new car recently, it's an extremely optioned FSI. It has a Symphony which I'd like to swap for an RNS-D.
I read many posts but everyone swaps for RNS-E. Looks and works great but as I have a fetish for factory state cars and RNS-E never was an option I insist on RNS-D.
Do you have any experience with how to swap Symphony for RNS-D? The car has sat nav and Bose too.
Thanks!
George

@timmus will be along shortly I'm sure to put your query to rest. It is not a simple swap out for an RNS-D though, other modules are required(Tom will know a lot more than me though!!)

Upgrading to RNS-E is certainly a lot easier.
Retrofitting RNS-D is possible, but it’s an older system than the Symphony II, meaning that you’ll need to convert the wiring behind the stereo to an earlier standard. Additional wiring looms will need to be installed, plus there’s the TMC module. Getting the steering wheel controls to work with RNS-D also adds to the complexity of the conversion.
You’ll also need to electrically separate the existing basic SatNav system, otherwise this will create a conflict with RNS-D.

It’s all possible, but you perhaps need to question whether the effort is worthwhile for an archaic SatNav that doesn’t work anymore and that therefore offers less than the Symphony II.

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks, Tom,

The thought is getting to me more and more to pay a visit to picturesque England! :)
As soon as I prepared the FSI for the hassle-free next 100.000km I'm heading to Lancaster.
Or, we can arrange a few days Budapest popup workshop, and I show you the famous hiking routes and the most beautiful viewpoints in Hungary! :)

Cheers,

George
