Sarge Project 3.......

It's nothing like your cup holder mod Tom, how so? both of the cup holders are in full use as before.

Ah, I mean that it provides similar functionality by mounting a phone in that general position... except your screen in massive by comparison!! :)

If you remove the cup holders (they are not used THAT much), then the screen can sit even lower and have a really "integrated" look. AND if the Tablet has quite a wide range of functionality (Sat-Nav, DAB, apps, even DVBT?), then the RNS-E becomes redundant. So that space could be used for lower, but useable, air-vents. A tablet located centrally would bring the A2 right up to date!

Great idea! Much better size than a massive ipad that some people have done!!

Width wise, an Ipad just fits correctly. In a double-DIN dash, if it is positioned on top of the Air-con unit, it reaches half way through the top air-vents. This is good because that's where the air-vents still want to be located. That top dash-section curves above the vents and so with some careful re-contouring, the original vents could be retained. It might be possible to source some narrower vents from another make/model.
There are quite a few modern cars that use a large centre screen for most of the cars functions. Heating and ventilation appear there and using sat-nav is superb! In fact, there are hardly and conventional knobs/dials to be seen! Simple touch control of everything is so easy using that screen. My Apple Ipad is 24 cm wide x 19 cm high and the screen is 20 cm wide x 15 cm high. I don't consider that to be "massive" and it looks pretty good when held in place in the car. I would be very interested to know just what functions could be performed on it in the A2? Could it receive DAB, DVBT and could it connect to diagnostic socket to display mpg, miles to empty, distance, etc?

How about a few pics of things people have centre mounted and how - perhaps in a new thread? Some discussion about what could be controlled from the pad too? Could air con buttons be covered for example?

There's not much that can't be covered, using an Ipad. A search of the Internet for DBVT shows a few options .... There are SO many apps, there must be one for everything! There are plenty of Ipad's around, second-hand. I paid about £150 for mine and it's quite recent with a 32Gb memory. I wouldn't miss it if it was permanently installed!

The air vents in my Mercedes SLK are much narrower and would be ideal in the revised Audi A2 dash. There's plenty of broken SLK's around for parts, too. I have an Audi A2 "mint" double-DIN dash, spare. However, I'd have liked to have kept it that way and to have modified my existing dash (which is already modified LOL!) I'm going to end up with something REALLY special .... I just know it! Looks like I'm going to have an RNS-E for sale, plus a lot of other parts .... I'll have to make sure that my Apple Ipad really is a versatile item to use in the A2? I would imagine that Tom (Timmus) is going to be the "fountain of knowledge" regarding that topic?

I have had two hire cars in the last 6 month, due too two numptys, writing two of my last two car's off. God that's a mouth full said the nun to the vicer. My point is, my first car was a Merc 200 d and it had the screen in the center. Was a class car top spec and bloody fast lol.
Also a Peugeot 308 with the screen in the center, no where near as good as the Merc, and crap to drive. The screen in you're A2 is just as good if not better than the two car's I have driven in the last 6 months.
I'd say on par with the AMG Merc

Is part 3 the A2 driving itself Michael, I mean Sarge... aka the Knight Industries Two Thousand (for those of us of a certain generation...).

A great job Sarge - nice one!

LOL...YES!... have to teach Alexa to drive! ... Yes I vividly remember Knight Rider, in fact on my first car (Ford Cortina MK5) I designed, made and fitted proper knight rider lights, I was 18 and it was a big hit with everyone then:) I recall driving into an exhaust place and all the staff were mesmerised by the lights

Perhaps....... :)

Can you get voice-activated Sat-Nav, too?

David

Yes the RNS-E has the modify option and then is voice controlled. I did a 'How to' here somewhere, when I fitted this to my DTM.

Meanwhile I'l have a play with the tablet to see if google or the like can do it :)
