Service at non audi/vw dealer

Hi all,

Instead of taking my car to a vw approved service centre this am I took it to a nice local garage, the cars at 85k, the service was quoted at circa £280 from vw approved dealers and the local garage £195 + £20 extra for the long life oil, so £215 all in. The car runs so much sweeter now! Looks like nobody ever changed the fuel filter at 40k like they should've! Feels so much more alive after the service, one issue tho is the service indicator is saying 9300 miles till the next service, I went back and showed the dealer as it should be around 20000 and I've paid extra to have the right oil etc. So he tried setting the service interval with the diagnostic laptop to 20,000 but said the only option is 15,000 for diesel or 30,000 for petrol!? I know it's meant to be 20,000(well I think I do) so I went off feeling a bit miffed but he'd set it to 15,000 and I'll do that pretty soon anyway so not a huge issue, when I restarted the car tho it's back at 9300! I wish I'd taken it to someone who knows what they're doing now! I can't take the car back to the dealer I used previously, especially after getting a quote from them and going elsewhere! But surely I can sort this out myself? Or do I need the diagnostic equipment to set the car to long life servicing? Maybe I should take the car to another vw specialist and pay them to reset the service interval? I'd appreciate your thoughts on this,

Many thanks

John

With a diagnostic tool the dealer should be able to reset it to 30000 miles/24 months for your TDI90. Obviously the options in his program didn't match with the A2. Eventhough he would reset it correctly you will not be able to confirm this because the service interval counter will sometimes, depending what program is used, show 9300 miles to begin with and then change as you drive. My last service was at an Audi dealer and the service interval counter said 30000 miles immediately after the service but most people say theirs show 9300. You can only reset it to fixed intervals without a diagnostic tool.

The intervals given are correct but they are in km not miles. So 9300 is correct.

Correct me if I am wrong, but 9300km is 5778.8 miles so that dose not give you 30k miles?

And if the service indercator was in km and the odemater was is in miles would that not bring up invorect servce to miles intervils?

I was under the impression that the service indercator changes as the car is being driven to reflect the type of trips you are making?

after both my longlife services the counter showed 9300 miles. This then changes depending on driving habits. Mine went up from 9300 to 22,000 after 500 miles. It goes up and down to suit, but always mine has started at 9300.

I've yet to hear that anyone else here has had the service counter show 30000 miles (approx 50000 km) just after the service...Anyway it's a good way to know that it has been set correctly. With it showing just 9300 miles (approx 15000 km) you will not be sure until it starts to climb.

Well that sounds good to me, thanks for all that info guys, I'll just drive it and hope the service interval climbs :) won't be long I do about 500-1000 miles a week lol :) hopefully using the local independent will remain a wise choice :)
The 9300 miles thing sounds like I'm Getting exactly the same messages as everyone else so it must be good :)

Wish i was able to attend audis in the park today!

Cheers

John
