Service Offered: Colour DIS

These look ace but I just can't justify the cost at the moment. Just want the car running and looking well.

Besides I need to start to contemplate not spending money on it for a bit.

10 of 11 units now reserved. Just one left!

I've attached a photo of the home screen whilst driving on cruise control. Apologies for the poor quality pic; it was taken by the passenger using a phone, and there's dust on the cluster's window. However, it gives a very good idea of the general screen layout.

CDCC.jpg

Along the top, you can see audio information from the stereo. In this case, we're tuned to FM, traffic updates are active and the radio station is called Pop FM.

In the centre of the screen, you can see that cruise control is set to 97km/h.

The instantaneous consumption is 3 litres per 100km. This Colour DIS installation was done in a 1.2TDI in Denmark, so the units are set appropriately for that country. UK conversions will be set to read in mph and miles per gallon by default, though this is easily changed by the user.

The 'OK' message shown in blue simply means that there's nothing to report. Should you need new brake pads, or washer fluid, or fuel, etc, such warnings are shown in this space.

The '5' indicates the selected gear. In this case, the installation was done in an A2 with an automatic gearbox, but this feature also functions in manual vehicles.

The green box around the '5' indicates that the car is currently exceeding a user-determined fuel efficiency. In this case, the driver wanted to know when the car was using 3 litres per 100km or less.

The values in the bottom left corner show instantaneous consumption and average consumption, but these areas can be used to display any accessible readings.
The values in the bottom right corner show turbo boost pressure (which was changing when the photo was taken, hence the blurred numbers) and engine inlet temperature. Again, this area can be made to display any of 14 different readings.

It's not a complete or thorough guide, but it gives you a good idea of what a Colour DIS cockpit looks like.

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks Tom, that's a heck of a lot of information in such a small space. :) Am I right in thinking you can customise it around, so perhaps have the stereo information in the centre?

Yes, you do get to display a lot of information at once, but you don't have complete control over the layout; audio info is always at the top, the cruise setting always appears in that position, etc. What you can do is decide which reading you want where. The four smaller readings at the bottom are always present. As such, you can choose four 'favourites' to be on display at all times. Your 'main' reading in the centre of the display is the classic carousel of readings that you'll know from standard DIS. You can choose, in a background menu, which of the 14 readings you wish to appear in your carousel. There's a lot you can do to customise it, but nevertheless a familiar arrangement is prescribed. You can't, for instance, have mp3 bitrate dominate your screen. :p

Hi Tom
Quite keen on this. Can in place of 'fuel remaining' have fuel pressure instead ? -have the fuel level gauge anyway.
Many thanks
Martin

I will be no 11 then ?
Thanks transferring now.
Martin

Hi Martin,

You are indeed number 11 of 11! Funds gratefully received and you're firmly on the list.

In reply to your earlier post...
Diesel A2s don't have a fuel pressure sensor. Pumpe Düse TDIs, like those fitted in our cars, have no need for fuel pressure information. As such, this information doesn't exist anywhere in the car's electronic systems, and Colour DIS can obviously only display the information it's sent.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Tom,
Thank you good news.
I am happy to fit a pressure sensor on my Bosch (not Luk) tandem pump. Maybe the same one as for the oil pressure will fit 1/8" thread I believe. A different one may make calibration necessary ?
In a standard tuned engine I think it is more important than turbo boost gauge as it may warn of an imminent fuel starvation problem which could happen with contaminated fuel or in my case the tandem pump was gradually giving up. If a car suffers from poor fuel pressure, by the time it is noticed and rectified it could cause injector damage.
I think the pressure will normally vary between 20 and 60 psi at tickover, maybe up to around 120 psi at high revs ? . . .so similar to oil pressure
Hope it is not difficult ?
Cheers

Hi folks,

Just a quick update for all those who have ordered Colour DIS...
I formally placed the order a few days ago and have paid for all units. They've since been boxed up and posted, so I'm expecting a delivery early next week.

I'm already hatching a vague plan for getting these all installed as soon as I can, but I'll post further details about that when it's less vague. :)

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Tom, Will there be a second batch. I wanted to order one, but I was too late unfortunately. Look forward to your reply. Kind regards Duncan

Hi Duncan,

Apologies for the delayed reply.

Of the 12 Colour DIS units that are currently in my possession, all of them are already owned by members of this club. So, unless someone changes their mind, I don't have any spares. However, a second order is almost certain to happen. There are a number of people who are interested in just buying the screen and doing the installation themselves, so the next order will hopefully cater for everyone.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Tom, Thanks for the reply. I figured thia much. In problem. Can you give an estimate when you will place the order for the next batch? Of course, in case anyone changes their mind, I’d be happy to take his place. I will keep an eye on this page.
Regards Duncan
