Service Offered: Colour DIS

Hello folks,

I have an update for everyone and a proposal to start getting these Colour DIS units into people's cars.

I currently have 12 Colour DIS conversions to do and have 6 DIS clusters with the screen fade issue. I'd prefer not to remove the standard screen from perfectly good clusters, so the 6 clusters with the faded screens are being upgraded to Colour DIS. I should have all 6 converted by the end of the week. These will be installed in members' cars on an exchange basis, allowing me to then convert another 6 clusters. As such, I'm planning on rolling out the 12 Colour DIS clusters in 2 batches.

I'm sure everyone would like to get their Colour DIS cluster installed as soon as possible, but I need to think about the logistics, taking into account where people live in the country, whether their existing cluster can be taken in exchange, etc, etc. As such, I propose to embark upon a short retrofitting tour next week (week commencing 6th Nov). It's late notice, but I hope it's doable.

My proposed schedule goes as follows. Usernames are written in bold. Please find your username, read this post to the end, and then let me know (within this thread, please) whether that suits you...

Day 1, Mon 6th: Leave home. Evening - Muska.
Day 2, Tues 7th: Morning/Afternoon - chumsofmanutd. Evening - Simon_Blackburn.
Day 3, Weds 8th: Mbzpar, barryleng.bl
Day 4, Thurs 9th: Oko, Vorsprung durch Technik
Day 5, Fri 10th: Cenick, Alanb
Day 6, Sat 11th: Edwrai

On November 13th, I start building a recording studio audio system in Leicester. So, I need to be in Leicester by the evening of Sunday 12th. That means that the schedule above can be pushed back by a day, meaning Day 1 would be Tuesday 7th. Alternatively, the whole caboodle could be brought forward by a day, meaning Day 1 would be Sunday 5th. I'm also able to move Days 1 and 2 to the end, making them Days 5 & 6. Basically, there's some flexibility, but I want to be able to drive a simple route without toing and froing backwards and forwards along the M4 or whatever! I also know where I can sleep, and the order I've outlined means I'll never have a homeless night!

Let's make this happen if we can. :)

Keithb: you're currently scheduled to be part of the second batch of Colour DIS upgrades (as is everyone else who's not mentioned in the schedule above), but you would be the perfect candidate to fill a space should someone on the schedule above not be available.

I hope that all makes sense.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Matt,

That's great, thank you.

If the needs of others mean that the tour has to be pushed forwards/backwards by a day, I'll get back to you. There's also a chance that I'll do the jobs at yours/WOM at the end of the tour rather than at the beginning. All the members who are properly 'down south' are the key to this!

Cheers,

Tom

hi Tom

thanks for the update. Helpfully next week we will be in Eskdale Green - finishing touches and all that - travelling up on Sunday. Could take the A2 as well and drop in at yours maybe, or I could leave the car and a key here in Somerset so you could stay here!

Maybe drop a text tomorrow, and we can chat through options!

best

Alan

Morning Tom,

Thanks for putting this schedule together and for getting to us all so quickly. You have me down for Wednesday 8th November. This should be fine. I can be back home for 1pm that day. If you need to visit earlier my wife will be working from home that day.

Kindest regards

Paul

Thanks for your replies so far, chaps.

Hopefully the London crew will respond soon, which should start to cement things. :)

Cheers,

Tom

An update for you all on the upcoming trip...

Many thanks to everyone for their replies. More or less, everyone has given me the thumbs up, so it looks like we're good to go. The plan now looks like this...

Day 1, Mon 6th: Leave home. Evening - Muska.
Day 2, Tues 7th: Morning/Afternoon - chumsofmanutd. Evening - Mbzpar.
Day 3, Weds 8th: Simon_Blackburn, barryleng.bl
Day 4, Thurs 9th: Morning - Vorsprung durch Technik. Afternoon/Evening - Oko

Days 5 and 6 still up in the air.

Mbzpar and Simon_Blackburn - I've swapped you around because it makes my route significantly easier. Does that work for you both? Paul, are you available on Tuesday late afternoon/evening? Simon, does a visit on Wednesday suit you (around lunchtime?). If not, I'll revert to the original suggestion - it just means a bit of toing and froing across Suffolk, as I also need to factor in a trip to Haverhill.

Let me know and I'll set the plan in concrete.

Cheers,

Tom

Right then folks, the above schedule is set in stone. There are various other bits and pieces that I've arranged to do in the gaps, like collecting stuff for people, so the schdule is jam-packed. On Friday 10th and Sat 11th, there are other visits in the pipeline, but the precise timings are yet to be confirmed. Those members know who they are.

This morning I finally finished the first batch of Colour DIS clusters. By the time they get to looking like this, they're as good as done. Note that the screen protectors are still in place, hence the bubbles...

All that's then required is to calibrate the analogue needles...

And hey presto!...

(Notice that, on this page, Colour DIS allows you to diagnose a faulty coolant temperature sensor by directly comparing the readings from the engine-side sensor and the dash-side sensor. Given that the failure of one of these temperature sensors rarely triggers a fault code for VCDS to read, this is a very handy diagnostic feature of Colour DIS.)

The first installation is tomorrow. Then another on Monday, then another on Wednesday, two on Thursday and another a few days thereafter.

Cheers,

Tom

Big thanks to Tom ! !
Colour DIS is brill, kept me occupied and informed about what the motor was doing on a long day.
I drew power/speed graphs, measured torque (how does it do this ! though seems optimistic at nearly 300Nm ?) and got dizzy with all the TDC, vacuum and pressure readings.
Thought Tom got something wrong ;) when I noticed used gear was usually indicating neutral to find I drive riding the clutch
On the way back oil level sensor warning came on a couple of times :( but may well be one of those things my car has been able to fix itself :)
Well worth the investment if you want to keep your motor for a long time.
Tom, can the instantaneous mpg read up to 200mpg as on the original ? 99.9 mpg is quite a common sight on downhill motorway.
Thank you for the other work done too !
Cheers

Hello Colour DIS folk!

So, I've now fitted 7. Unforunately, I've been sucked into a recording studio vortex again (just like I was for the entirety of 2016), but am acutely aware that a few club members are still waiting for their Colour DIS cluster. You all know who you are, and I thank you very much for your patience.

My schedule is currently all up in the air because I'm waiting on a company in west Africa to decide whether they need my services during January or not. If I am needed, I've no choice but to go. If I'm not needed, then you'll all get your Colour DIS upgrades early in 2018.
One way or another, it's my No.1 A2OC priority. The reality is that studio work must be done to a schedule, so A2OC work tends to get slotted into the gaps. However, you've all made an up-front investment in the necessary parts and it's not fair of me to keep you waiting for an unreasonable length of time. I'll do my utmost to see everyone get their upgrade as soon as I can.

Thanks,

Tom

Absolutely no rush from me Tom. I'm happy to wait until later next year and fit into whenever you are free.
Also fitting stuff in cars would be much more enjoyable in Spring type weather ;).

K :)

I think tom (and particularly his fingers) can attest to that!

In case Tom is looking for indications as to whether a second batch of units would be viable, can I please add my name to the list of interested parties.
