Servicing Shocker

My wifes TDI Sport had its first variable service at a disappointing 13700 and at the grand old age of 20 months in Nov 05

On recently checking her service indicator it shows she has 2500 miles left.
Her mileage between Nov 05 and present is 3500. We realise the service indicator can vary, but in any event her driving style and journeys covered, are the same as prompted the first service.

Anyone had similar or can suggest a reason/solution.

We are delighted with the car but with such prohibitive potential servicing costs it is taking the shine away from the other savings owning such a car brings

That seems strange, im sure these cars (ours is a TDI) and after its last service was showing 30k till next long life service.

Seems odd?

Check that whoever carried out the service reset the service indicator for variable servicing - not all do (or know how to).

My last service was carried out by an Audi main dealer and even they put the car back into fixed interval servicing mode.

Ask the question of them and they can put the car back to how it should be and even compensate for the mileage driven since the service.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi bazarn
I understand the variable service intervals are calculated by the engine ECU which analyses engine load factor and average speed data.
Condensation, soot and acids from the combustion process all build up in the oil much more quickly on short, stop-start journeys. These contaminate the oil and deplete the additive package and can lead to premature wear which is why the service indicator calls for shorter periods between oil changes.

Your first service was done after 20 months which is not too far off the 24month limit, even though the mileage was only 13500. If i'm reading your mail correctly, your wife's average mileage has now dropped significantly, from 675 to 350+ per month.
Assuming the service indicator was set correctly, I recall other Club members have noted the mileage to the next service starts low then gradually builds up to a peak before the count-down begins. It is understandable that based on the type of running you are doing, the oil would need changing after 18 months which is not unreasonable, even though mileage would only be around 6000.
The 12 month or 10,000 mile fixed service intervals are probably more suited to the type of driving your wife is currently doing. Your car will soon be out of warranty so you could find a good independent garage who could work out a service routine to suit your particular circumstances.

Cheers Spike
