Shell Optimax

Greetings all

Had an offer at my local Shell - Optimax being the same price as regular unleaded - so I thought I'd give it a go.

the 1.6 didnt like it one bit. Infact the engine light came on - I thought it was going to be another trip to the garage to replace an injector (again).

So regular (95 ron) does the trick.

I've heard plenty of stories of how Optimax actually goes off quite quickly (the additives that are used to increase the octane levels and the detergents are quite volatile apparently) - maybe the reason they had an offer on was that the tank was quite old and they were trying to shift it - no surprise when it's such a price premium over regular unleaded, and the wonderful Tesco 99 Super Unleaded.

If you can find a pump with Tesco 99 in it, use that, it's great stuff. On my 3.0V6 the timing adapted forwards by 6degrees on that stuff, loads of extra power to be had.

interesting, it seems all the 1.6FSI owners reported great results with v-power. Even on the 1.4 petrol, it makes a marked difference.

Same price as the regular? could there be a catch?
