Hi Gerard,

Don't be so hasty to suspect your wife! Tells a whole lot about you two... ;)

But anyway, normally (lots of) people get shocks from their cars due to a buildup of static electricity.
Whether or not you build up a sufficiently painful charge depends on many factors: your clothing, your shoes, car clothing, weather (humidity) and other stuff.

Ways to diminish the effects should be:
- different shoes (no or less buildup)
- touching the metal of the car with a large surface, through clothing (less obvious discharge)
- touching the car with one of those special keychains. They have a small resistor or something inside that takes the 'hit'. Some even light up as a funky side-effect!

My experience is that it is worst in winter, when the weather is freezing and the air is dry.

Do a search through google, and be nice to your wife! ;)

gerard-does your wife ask you to hold onto a dodgy electrical wire whilst she turns on the main from a distance? Does she walk into the bathroom whilst your in the bath carrying a toaster? Be worried!.

Seriously, I have suffered the shocks too-different shoes make it better or worse. Now when I'm getting out of the car, I make sure my hand is touching the car body (door frame or suchlike) BEFORE you put the first foot on the ground. This way static just goes to ground without any jolts!.

Good luck!

Im glad in a strange way that someone else brought this up as for the past 3 weeks every time I get out of my car and I go to close the door I get a very nasty shock, it doesn't matter if I close the door by the rubber surround or the metal, it still happens.

As people have mentioned Ive tried different shoes, clothes etc but to no avail.

Help !!!![29]

Make sure your feet are on the ground before touching any metal part of the car and you'll be fine...I hope.

Failing that, earth yourself to home with a very long cable....

I found that, without really moving much in your seat, if you put your feet on the ground you can then touch the metal of the car as you lever yourself out of the seat. I've neve had it actually ground through my feet without touching the metal first!.

I bet when your walking along a road at night, street lights go out when your near them........[31]

Anyway my last post should have read touch the metal of the car before putting feet on ground. DOH!.

I find I can never get the car past the bollards outside Tesco, so I have to get out and push, yes PUSH a trolley around the shop. I ask you. Wouldn't be allowed in America!.
