Hi Gerard,
Don't be so hasty to suspect your wife! Tells a whole lot about you two...
But anyway, normally (lots of) people get shocks from their cars due to a buildup of static electricity.
Whether or not you build up a sufficiently painful charge depends on many factors: your clothing, your shoes, car clothing, weather (humidity) and other stuff.
Ways to diminish the effects should be:
- different shoes (no or less buildup)
- touching the metal of the car with a large surface, through clothing (less obvious discharge)
- touching the car with one of those special keychains. They have a small resistor or something inside that takes the 'hit'. Some even light up as a funky side-effect!
My experience is that it is worst in winter, when the weather is freezing and the air is dry.
Do a search through google, and be nice to your wife!
