I have a TDI90 75k with a noisy rattle at idle which dissappears at 1500 rpm. I am very confident that it is the auxilary drive belt tensioner just by the way it is rattling around and allowing the belt to flap. I have been to GSF today to get one and a belt. £43.50 + £7.95 + VAT Has anybody done this repair? Is it easy? Any tips? My skill level is normally 3 Haynes manual spanners. Maybe 4 on a good day. It looks like there is a split pin in the new tensioner which when removed would release the spring to do its thing. Access looks tricky. Should I just send it to the garage?

It can be a bit tricky to wind back the old tensioner and lock it off ( I used the stub end of an old drill bit) as you need a long spanner with the right offset to fit the tensioner arm.
If you can get that far the rest is quite easy......just make a sketch or take a photo of the belt routing before removal as its easy to forget how the belt goes back on.

I just recently had the very same problem with my tdi 90 and changed the belt which was ready for changing first, that quietened it slightly, then the tensioner and it quietened it a bit more, but the rattle was still there,
it turned out the cause of the rattle was the freewheel pulley on the alternator, it can be changed without needing a whole new alternator the part is £48.99+vat from audi but I let them fit it,
It is fine again now, all rattles are cured.
