silver dash rings

hoping to buy a a2 soon - alot of the SE's im looking at dont have the nice silver rings aroubd the dash clocks/guages or the gear gater.

are they easy to get hold of and fit as i think these little silver metal trims set the audis apart from the boring, in my opinion, black bmw interiors.

The trim ring around the gearstick can be fitted easily, but not necessarily cheaply (budget around £25), but the ones on the clocks are integral to the clocks and so you must replace the whole unit to get the silver rings, which will set you back over £500!

Cheers,

Mike

blast! nothings ever simple lol.

for some cars you can get aftermarket ones, i thought as the rings are not behind a plastic scren like most dask units aftermarket ones could be fitted, or was that just wishfull thinking on my part.

Pretty much wishful thinking - the A2 was such a low-volume seller that very few (none?) after market manufacturers did anything for it, other than parts which were common to other models (Golf4, Polo etc).

Cheers,

Mike

the silver trims are painted. If you get a set of clocks with them on, switching them out is a case of 2 torx 20 screws and 3 clips on the cowl, and then it's another 5-6 clips on the PCB / main clock unit itself. I'd say 20 minutes, but it must be a small tx driver, as the screws are on the top of the inside of the cowl and a long 'driver won't fit.

Fitting this would give you a negative look to the silver rings. Instead you would have silver background with black rings! Dunno... just an idea!

aaaaah thankyou,

do you have the same problem as with old style clock mileage dashes in that if you change the clocks/dash module your cars mileage is as the new clocks you have put in or is it centrally in the computer now days so changing the dash makes no difference and will still show the cars original data/mileage

wait, there's two different things going on:
- the mileage is stored in the clocks and is changeable using a PIN.
- the silver rings on the face of the clocks is a relatively simply removable piece of plastic; the swap should take less than half an hour. The clocks are put together so that there's a rear plastic housing, which clips onto the PCB; then the dials plastic, the needles and then the face is clipped into place.
This is then set into the dash binnacle using clips (and maybe a screw, thinking about it... I can't really remember) and the cowl is attached using the dual screws I mentioned earlier.

The aluminium Fordy linked to is a cheaper way of doing it; that would just mount over the top of the present dials.

I've got that alu-thing. Not mounted jet because it wouldn't "just" mount over the dial.
The shape of the cowl prevents this. I think I have to losen the cowl to fit the alu over the dials. Haven't figured out how to do this..

If I understand correctly what has been said here, it is possible to remove the front plate of a speedo (including dials rings and glass covers) and exchange it by a new one (possibly fitted with silver painted rings) ?

Thanks
