Slow To Warm Up?

Hi all,

Need some technical advice! I replaced the coolant temperature sensor yesterday as the temp guage was bouncing from 60 to 90 after searching on the forum, discovering it was a known problem and using the tips available.

However, after making the swop and topping the coolant back up and taking the car for a spin, it seems to take ages to get upto temperature (90). It took about 30 mins on a motorway run, whereas before the sensor change it used to take about ten mins. I'm thinking it could be the thermostat, but I need some second opinions/advice! It's a 53 TDi btw.

Many thanks all,
Doc

It's quite a warm day, say 18 degrees C? Surely it should warm up quicker than that? Not sure if it's me being paranoid or that the thermostat is not letting the engine warm up quick enough?

It could also be the water pump vanes failing
they are made of Plastic and break up so not pushing the water round as it should.
when was your timing belt etc done last?

My 03 TDi is also rather slow to warm up. In fact a 40mile round trip today with all of that on m-ways and the temp gauge didn't actually make it to a level 90C. I didn't get over 70mph so wasn't pushing the car, but is this normal small diesel engined behaviour?

I've read of several people having temp sender failures, but mine doesn't have the fluctuating reading issue. Could it be a similar failing 'stat?

I've done 88k. Incidentally the waterpump wasn't done when cambelt was done at 78k :(

I think from the records the pump was replaced at the cambelt service, so I don't think it's that. As you said Dan, the diesels are slow to warm up generally, but I'm just worried that if it's not getting the engine warm after a 30 mile trip that in the winter it will do some damage to the engine if the stat is stuck open.

I have got hold of a new stat and gaskets and will have a go at replacing this and the coolant tomorrow.

As a result, has anyone got any how to's on replacing the stat, or even a starter on where it is on the tdi?

Let us know how you get on with the new stat - take pictures of fitting if you can!

Well, having investigated the job, myself and a friend decided against taking the alternator off to do the job, I think I'll leave this one to the professionals and pay my mechanic an hours labour to fit the stat for me!
