Hi im writting this message on my phone so i hope it is clear. When i get a little rain on the screen and put the wiper across i get a very bad smear all over. To get rid i have to use the washers. Any idea whats causing this? The fluid is not lasting long when im using the washers every few mins. I havent got any rainx on. Thanks

De-grease the windscreen first and then try a new wiper blade. You can de-grease using a good old squirt of toothpaste (don't use anything that is whitening) and rub it in to the screen with a sponge or cloth with plenty of water in it.

Rinse off then wipe the blade itself with toothpaste solution and see if it's any better.

From what I recall, you had a new wiper blade (and arm) at Chatsworth didn't you?

Cheers,

Mike

Totally agree!!
I had identical symptoms earlier in the year which were cured immediately with a new blade.

Didn't work for me. I've always had smearing on the passenger side despite changing the wiper blade twice. It shows up when the roads are particularly muddy or covered in salt. I suspect there isn't enough pressure on that side.

I shall try Mike's suggestion of non whitening toothpaste. I've only got whitening toothpaste in the house, is there anything else to try? And can the water repellent coating normally applied to the rear windscreen be used on the front?

Indeed yes - you should always try to keep the screen as clean as possible and keep RainX applied to it on a regular basis.

Give the whitening stuff a go, but use plenty of water and don't apply too much pressure, as the whitening paste can scratch the glass.

Mike's right. Toothpast is brilliant at clearing away the grease and road stuff off the windscreen and wipers. Been using this method for some time now. It works very well.

Cheap and simple cleaner for inside and out is dilute vinegar. Cuts through grease and grime on both sides . Wipe off with clean water for shiny windows.

ps historical festive fact window cleaners realised power of acids to clean glass years ago. They used to use picric acid as it etches the surface, trouble was even if using rubber gloves any holes are deadly as the picric anaethetetizes the finger then the picric etches away the bone. Big problem when it comes to taking off the gloves.

PS this is true I used to work in a laboratory!

Super Festive story Merry Christmas to all A2oc members.

I bought a replacement wiper today. Best thing I did in ages. So easy to fit. And only £12 from the dealer.

As mentioned in a previous post I've found the H**f*rds stuff to be the best version of Rain X.

In this weather I give all the car windows a clean every evening as well as the wiper.

Back window is due a re-coat of Aquapel, may order extra and try it on the windscreen too.

Cheers
