Im sure this has been asked a million times but im a cautious character so will ask again.

My girlfriend is on the lookout for a replacement car for some time in the future when the right car comes up. She currently owns and drives a smart car 2001 owned since new. The car has done a grand total of 35,000 miles and has been maintained regardless. The car has also had some practical and some not so practical modifications. She was also a near founding member of a global smart club and we used to orgainse events/meets etc. You get the idea, she loves her cars she owns.

Anyway time to move to a more practical car and the A2 seems a good choice (although she is keeping the smart).

We have looked at a couple of A2's one which was a 1.6FSi and one 1.4 petrol. Idealy I would want a 1.4 diesel but due to the low milage a 1.4 petrol would fine.

Apart from the obvious wear and tear and milage issues, is there anything which these cars suffer from which I would need to look out for.

We would want a low milage car idealy with leather (which the smart has) and reversing sensors although these can be added. Service history etc etc would be a must.

Any tips?

Should we wait until the new release, will the older models then fall away in price?

Not in a rush as said but over the next 12 months would be good.

Thanks

S

Welcome. There are quite a few Smart car owners on this forum too, myself included.

My personal preference of the petrols is the 1.6FSI. More technology, more refinement all for similar economy.

As I understand it the new A2 will be a very different kind of car to the old A2. It's been 5 years since the last A2 was built, so I doubt prices will drop away with the launch of the new one. Even today the A2 has held it's value better than its only real competitor, the Mercedes A-class.

With LongLife service intervals it's possible to go for 2 years between services. Just make sure this has not been at the expense of overall good car maintenance.

Another (ex) Smart owner here.

I swapped from my fortwo to the A2 for increased practicality as well.

I personally wouldn`t wait for the new A2 to arrive, try to find a good used one now.

Have a look at the FSI the ride on the 17' alloys is alittle hard but I have not bothered to do anything about it. I did have a little rattle on the rear side soon after purchase and took it back to the Garage and they found a broken road spring that was hidden as broken a tiny bit at the top. I love the FSI and I am happy I bought one, I have owned other german cars like a Golf and 1 series but I love the A2 and the fact a get waved at by other A2 drivers. I feel like Im in a club and not just driving a mass produced Dagenham Dustbin.

Her car is a 2001 as said so no heated seats although very rare papria colour.

Interesting about the FSi as I was told these were the least desirable as they are hard on their gearboxes?

Thanks

ps We have another car so is there any typical problems with cars doing low milage?

I can't say if they are hard or not, but I have not had any issues with the gearbox. I tested the TDi and as it was my first A2 I had driven, I loved it. I only came across a 1.6 FSI by chance as I was in Portsmouth Audi and looking at a A2 TDi there and across the road was a private dealer with a same year 1.6 FSI with lower miles and £500 cheaper. Drove both, did the deal on the FSI as I just felt happier with the FSI sport's drive. Also I had diesel previously and felt like mixing it up. Probably going to keep this car for some time unless I get my 996 and then I will have to purchase the missus a Fiat 500. Dam it.
