Space Saver Wheel

Hello Everyone.

I'm not sure if this has been covered in other threads

Further to the tales of woe concerning the white gloop. (which I have)

What is the specification for the spacesaver wheel/tyre.

And, what other VAG cars use the same? (I can't imagine the A2 having a unique size, although the dealer spacesaver price seems fairly unique to me).

Ps. I've just noticed the screws holding the rear numberplate lamp lenses in place are quite rusty.. I must find some stainless ones to replace them. (surprised stainless weren't used in the first place given the rest of the car's anti rust measures)

The back of the car number plate surround (where the cars number plate and insignia are held )is only plastic so no rust is going to occur from those screws on the numberplate lamp.

PS there's one of those Space Savers on Ebay at the mo.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Genuine-Audi-...592126560QQcategoryZ10372QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

But remember Beta, as rust causes the screw heads to expand, they will eventually crack the lenses that they are holding in place, requiring new lenses and screws.

JLo, you are right - get some stainless self-tappers installed before it is too late. I have done so, having learned my lesson from my first A2.

There were photographs on the old web-site complete with part numbers for all the fixings. Ben should be able to dig these out.

It is a Vredenstein Tyre and is probably unique to the A2 since it is stored deflated and grows in radius as you inflate it - amazing! When I last spoke to Vredenstein they would not supply me with one direct - they told me it was supply through Audi only. the tyre is a Vredenstein 155/70-15 78P - can aparantly only be fitted by a specialist! Audi's price for wheel and tyre is £200 - best free extra we have ever had.

If you want to fix it in the boot there is a bracket which fits over the battery (8Z0 801 645 B) Bracket fixings are 2 off hex socket screws, look like M7 (take 6mm allen key), length overall 16mm, and 2 off bolts, look like M8 (13mm socket) 25mm overall length. These look like Audi specials as they have tapered points and captive washers!

The wheel then fixes to it through the boot floor using a spacer disc (8Z0 863 327) and bolt with large plastic head (8Z0 803 899).

There are threaded brass inserts in the boot lining for the fastenings - no cheap stuff here!

Johann once wrote a fitting guide as well.

Ours was been used in twice in anger (previous car) - wife hated driving on it.
