Spare wheel

Went to fit the space save bracket this afternoon, seemed straight forward enough until I noticed the threads missing in the battery compartment area.

Do I need more parts or were they just missed in production?

The threads for the bracket should be there. Or at least they were in the 2x A2s i retrofitted the spare whee bracket.

The threads can come out with the bolt when undoing them if they have been over tightened or had moisture in the boot.

If you cannot find the correct threads to insert into the holes you will certainly be able to purchase a replacement battery tray from @A2Steve which should have the threads you’re after.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks Tom, didn't know the tray was removable. It doesn't look as if they were ever fitted, but if it is a base I need then hopefully Steve has one.

In my limited experience (only fitted bracket to 2x A2s) I have not had to get any threaded inserts for retrofitting the spare wheel bracket. Both the cars I fitted the bracket to already had the inserts in the 2 empty holes shown in your picture. I might just have been lucky but my guess is that they are fitted to all A2s.

Seems that your A2 might have had the bracket fitted previously and the threads have come out when the bracket was removed. Have you already got the hole in the lifting floor for the ‘wheel anchor/holder’, not sure the name but sure you understand what I’m on about.

Kind regards,

Tom

The space-saver spare was deleted as an option from roughly mid-production run I believe. Later cars therefore don't have the threads pre-fitted, but these can be sourced from earlier cars that don't have a spare, and retrofitted.

I’ll look to remove the 2x threaded inserts from my breaker.

If you’re wanting them then you can have them FOC, all I ask is a couple of £s for a Jiffy bag and postage.

Give me until lunchtime tomorrow and I should have them removed.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks, let me know details tomorrow.

wow they really were trying to cost cut at every opportunity after a few years. Just adds merit to the idea that they lost money on each one before options were ticked.

Hi a m6 revnut fits very well in the blank , this thread sizes matched brass insert

for reference, my 2005 td, has the brass inserts , but my 2004 does not, so not really sure which cars have them

fitting the revnut, I used a bit of “ locktight “ to help keep them in place , and I had a couple left over from fitting the boot floor bracket

kind regards Mark

I’ve managed to remove them for you. They certainly didn’t want to come out. They look to be glued in with some loctite/superglue. They look a little scratched from removal but work perfectly.

If you’re still interested then just send me a PM and we can discuss PayPal and address details to get them to you. I’m due to go out shopping tomorrow so not putting me at any more risk than I was already planning on anyway.
