If you don't speed you don't need one. If you do you put someone else's life at risk as well as your own.

If you want to exceed the limit go to a track day, don't use the public highway.

I have no excuse mate other than I gave up fighting for the duvet cover about an hour ago.

We respecet to your comment, which I agree with,, it is easy to get caught doing 32mph in a 30mph zone without being a racey sort of person and the cameras in our area are set to about 3-4mph above each zone.

On the M25 it is easy to drop your speed from 70mph down to 60mph but if you do not do it at the point of that 60mph sign you are going to get nabbed.

Personally I find the fun of have a RD often means that I drive boringly below the speed limit as a matter of course as I am constantly reminded by the RD what the speed of the road is and what my speed is.

Most idiots who get caught doing 20-30mph above a speed limit are just that, idiots.

My brother is a traffic cop and he says that all speed camera's are set at 10mph over the speed limit. I regularly drive past a camera in a 30 zone doing 35 mph and it's never went off. I will admit I'm not willing to push my luck any more unless I had my plates covered but I generally drive just under 10mph over the speed limit (conditions permitting) as a rule so as not to get caught by unseen camera's.

10mph over used to be a norm,, NOT anymore,, too much money to be made and also research shows that just 5mph over can be fatal.

Our town host a university with the countries leading man on road psychology and the town is used for all sorts of experiements and road saftey issues and the cameras in our area will nab you at 4mph above their speed limit,, proof pudding is in the number of name and shames priniting in our local weekly..

Tend to agree with Ian on this one, don't need one. Stay within the limit and keep the risk down for all...

Speed doesn't cause accidents, idiots do !!

I totally agree with the speed limits in built up areas but 70mph on a motorway, thats just to slow and out of date..

Even if you are in the minority and don't speed I would highly reccomend one of these units as they don't just warn you of speed cameras but they also warn of accident black spots, making for safer driving.

One thing that annoys me is lack of signs. In my local area I know where I'm going and what the limits are. If I visit other parts of the UK, I'm looking around me for signs etc and will occasionaly miss the speed sign, only to see a "camera" sign time and time again-but no speed limit repeater.

If we are to stick to speeds, why can't they remind us a bit more often. You can't always judge a road to be a 60mph as it may be a high accident blackspot and a 40mph limit applies-but do they remind you of this....do they heck.

Just one of my gripes.

Inapropriate speed limits are too blame as well, some roads should have the speed increased and some should have it decreased.

Driving below the stated speed limit is just as dangerous as driving over it.

Agree on lack of signs, sometimes you turn onto a road and can't see a sign so sometimes slow down to 30 for example only to find it a 40. I always drive at the speed limit if I can. I want to get there quick, but not speed.

Mal, I see you figured out the profile pic. Nice colour!

have to agree that 70mph is /*way*/ too slow on the motorway; in the UK they're all superbly built and maintained, and then when it's empty at 10pm (it does happen occasionally on the M1!) you have to stick to 70.

okay, i'm biased. I live in Germany, and i tend to cruise at something over 85 in the a2; with a faster vehicle, e.g. BMW 5 series, then 120 (200kms) is no problem. but then you still get overtaken by the porsches...:)

problem remains that inappropriate speed limits encourage their disregard and therefore provoke disobedience.

Something else: the official line is "these are for safety, because there have been too many accidents". Falk, *huge* atlas producer, created a map with all the present stationary camera setups in Germany. massive outcry from the police union "you're encouraging speeding"; falk: "no we're not, we're warning about accident blackspots. or are the cameras not necessarily only at blackspots???" answer: resounding silence.

it's well known here that the local councils get the income from teh mobile speed cameras, so they put them on the major commuting routes to get the commuters. I have a simple answer: i've calibrated my speedo and i don't go above the limit (limit + 5km/h). It means i sometimes have a queue of traffic behind me, but _none_ of us have to pay a fine.

out of interest, what are the fines in the UK now? the last time i was caught, i was doing 16km too fast in a 30 km/h zone, and had to pay 17 quid.....

just my two penn'orth...

greetings from odenwald (that's 80km south of Frankfurt/Main)
where it's going to hit 25 again in the shade..... :)

Having never been 'done' for speeding I don't know the specifics, but a guy at work was caught doing 83mph in a 70mph zone and got £50 and 3 points on his license.

Yep, thats the standard fine now - £60 & 3 points. Sadly I speak from experience - luckily, it could have been worse. I have now slowed down to a more sedate style of driving.

Today, I was cruising at 80mph on a dual carriageway going with the flow, when a white van came up the outside 90-95mph closely followed by a Volvo police car. The van driver seemed completely oblivious as he didn't even attempt to move over or slow down. Needless to say he got pulled a mile down the road.

I belive the van driver was a danger - not because of his speed but because of him being cocooned in his own little world, not aware of other cars on the road.

Interesting discussion this... According to the AutoExpress Driver Power 2002 survey* thingy, A2 owner respondents came fifth in the league of cars that were flashed by speed cameras:

Top 10 cars flashed by a speed camera:
Porsche Boxster (78 per cent)
Saab 9-5 (70 per cent)
MCC Smart (59 percent)
BMW MINI (58 per cent)
Audi A2 (57 per cent)
Audi TT (57 per cent)
BMW 5-Series (53 per cent)
Mercedes E-Class (53 percent)
Alfa Romeo 166 (52 per cent)
Mercedes C-Class(52 per cent)

Many of the above I can understand... but surely it should be 59% of Smart owners claim to have been caught! [21]

  • *Apologies if this link has been dredged up before - googled it while looking for something else...
  • After a 3 week absence, A2 spotting in Greece (score=5), I've not logged in - WTH has happened to the smilies???

I don't beleive the survey - there are no "white vans" represented!
