Speed limit display on RNSE

If you want to have the speed limit of the road you are on displayed on the map display on an RNSE it is possible (although I believe that it is only possible on the Mark 2 RNSE but happy to be corrected)

As many of you know, I do like my gadgets and this function is GREAT.

It comes with the latest beta firmware upgrade from the PCBBC website (google PCBBC RNSE). Huge thanks go to that site (I will be posting a donation to them today for helping get this function working)
Speed limit displays on a car that was designed 20 years ago !!!!!!!

you need to download the update (I chose the May 2020 beta version) but download it and burn it on a CD not a DVD (using the instructions on their site).

insert the CD into the RNSE and it will automatically upgrade.

That firmware update will also enable the RNSE to accept a coding of the unit as an A6 (which the 193B version allows as standard but the newer Mark 2s didn’t (eg the 193g unit)

you need the latest satnav map disc (not a bad idea anyway) the later the better. Ideally a 2019 or 2020 year disc (available on EBay)

But in my case with all of this done, mine still refused to give me the option to switch the speed display on (in the settings menu in the Sat nav area.)

After a LOT of trial and error and PLENTY of help from Tom (2Work) and then Ian (Bargepower who help me eliminate the sat nav disc version as the cause). I cracked it.

For sone reason, in my case I had to switch on the capability via VCDS.
To do this you select the 37 Navigation controller.
select adaption
Select controller 17 (no help or titles will appear)
The setting will show Zero
Change this to 1 then save (and accept the prompt) then close the controller and exit VCDS. That enables the option in the menu, if you set it to 2 it gives you an over speed warning too.

Select NAV on the RNSE then hit the setup button and page down and you should now see the “Speed display” option switch it on and hey presto you get the speed limit of the road you are on displayed as below.
Isn’t that cool!!!!!
MAJOR thanks to Tom and the PCBBC guys and Ian.
Thanks guys.

An update on the “over speed warning”
If you have set channel 17 to 2 the speed display menu option changes to give you
Off
On
5mph
10mph
Etc.

This is (I believe) to indicate the trigger for the over speed warning.
BUT I am not getting those warnings and Stuart from the PCBBC site mentioned that it is connected to the fact that our units are coded as A6.
He is sending me further details about this and I will let you know if there is a workaround. (It is basically because the RNSE is not able to read the actual speed of the car.

I’ve updated the coding in VCDS and I’m now getting the same screen as @Birchall
I’ll see if it works “as is” later this afternoon after work, but as I can’t put my hand on my release keys, if it doesn’t work I can’t check if the gala wire is connected to the right pin until I find them.

I found my removal keys and the original Gala wire in the car is connected to the V Signal pin in Connector B in the Quadlock.
Speed warning doesn't function, however.
On having a read of the firmware manual, it looks like it needs connecting to pin 2 in the C connector if it’s going to work as an “A6”

Ian,

Did you move the Gala wire from the B Connector to the C Connector. Any results to report sir?

Kind regards,

Tom

I did. Still nothing.
That’s a shame Ian,

was hoping you was going to report that you got it working. I’m sure we will get it to work eventually.

I’ve just changed the channel 17 setting from 1 to 2 and now have the over speed warning option. Also moved the speed signal pin from the B Connector to C2. Will have a drive in the morning to see if I have anything different to report but quite doubtful.

After reading further into the release notes, it seems that to achieve what we want we need an ‘Arnuino’ item to add to the harness somewhere. I guess that what this ‘Arduino’ does is replicate the missing signal/command that enables the speed over CAN messaging that seems to be missing on later RNS-E units.

I don’t want to be beaten by this but it’s something I have no understanding of. Maybe Tom @timmus can jump in and to give us an explanation of this......... Then tell us when he can supply this missing item. Tom, help!

Kind regards,

Tom

Have a read here. The hardware needs a bit of software to do the job. No idea if it's been done, but if so it'll be open source. You need to search the Arduino community to find it.

Mac.
Mac,

Reading through the release notes of the PCBBC Firmware it seems to have been done. The required code for the Arduino to work is also displayed. Just need to find someone who understands this subject to announce what sort of costs are involved to produce such an item.

Kind regards,

Tom
