Spoiler versus Rear Windscreen Wiper

I wonder, especially since the rear window gathers so much gunge, due to the design of the car I suppose, why Audi decided to put a spoiler instead of a rear windscreen wiper. Do all A2 drivers have this wish, or is it just me? Pardon me if this has been discussed before.

Rear spoilers are ugly and they would hurt the aerodynamics of the car.

Spoilers can be ugly I agree. Though I wouldn't go as far to say that the A2's is (but that's a matter of opinion)
But when designed properly they can actually help the aerodynamics. By keeping the air passing over the car laminar, rather than turbulent you can reduce the coefficient of drag. Wiper blades and other obstructive parts disrupt this laminar flow. Having said all of that the difference between spoiler and wiper blades is small when compared to the amount of drag tyres give. So if you want to reduce drag fit some really skinny tyres on the A2......I think they did something similar for the 1.2 TDi A2.

Thanks for the responses boys, but to re-iterate, am I the only one who wishes there was a windscreen wiper on the rear windscreen instead of a spoiler?

Did I say spoilers ?? I ment wipers !! Rear wipers are ugly !! We don't need no stinkin' wipers !!

Serious, I never miss a rear wiper. Except when standing still in the rain. When I drive the rearwindow is always clean.
I think that the absence of a rear wiper is the aerodynamics. I've read that the A2 is shaped like a drop of water and that that's the most aerodynamic form (nature always shows us how to do things), a wiper would disturb the flow of air.

Not sure that I agree with Dennis on the rear window always staying clean! Perhaps I dont get to drive fast enough to clear it on a typical run to work! My father's old style A6 (the 100 shape) has windows (rear & side) that clear very easily - good aerodynamics certainly...

I find the top section of the window stays quite clean, but maybe that's because I do mostly motorway mileage and the faster airflow helps. The bottom section is usually filthy after only 2 days. Some smaller washer jets under the spoiler might help!

How does the special coating on the rear window help? Sounds like not a great deal, suppose it jusr repels water but the water doesn't take the dirt with it!

I REALLY wish I had one... don't miss it really but wish there was one. Look at the first ever Avant the 1980s Audi 100 Avant... It had EXACTLY the same split rear window with spoiler and that had a wiper... also the first Scirocco... split rear window WITH wiper... so it is totally possible to fit one but Audi was just to lazy or something...

Why oh why oh why do you people keep going on about the rear window & lack of a wiper, I have no problem with mine, keep a cloth in the boot to give the lower section a quick wipe as required (very rarely)& I keep a turtle wax 'blade' to quickly remove the misting type water from the upper window you sometimes get when its cold, (also good for quickly cleaning off the other windows) rainwater desn't bother me, it soon blows off when you get moving.
