I replaced the starter motor on Thursday and all seemed OK, today flat battery on removing the bonnet I looked at the starter positives and this is what I see:

It looks like that battery cable has shorted out somewhere?
Have I missed something or screwed something up?

It looks like you have a metal bracket in there wrong place. But difficult to tell from the photo
Suggest you disconnect battery and remove the thick wire to the starter and re do it

Exactly this ^ The bracket is on the wrong side of the cables and the cables were actually shorting to ground via that bracket: if this was the case, you probably came very close indeed to torching the car

Oh that’s worrying :(
Has anybody got any pictures of how it should go?

You have likely blown the master fuse on the batter terminal. If not then like Rusty says you are VERY lucky as there will have been a lot of amp flowing through the cables to earth

Yeah, to get those to go blue takes 300-400 celsius. The good news is your jacket potatoes are done ?

Lets hope all the electrics reset after correcting the starter and no other long term damage has been done to the electrics, battery or starter.

Here is the manual page....

Thanks everbody, main fuse seems OK when tried jumping it earlier everything came on but wouldn’t start hence why I looked straight away at the starter motor.
Another one has been ordered - annoyed with myself that this has happened, but lucky we still have a vehicle to fix.

Would disconnect the battery and remove the wiring from the starter. Locate all the parts correctly then refit the cables correctly to the starter. Reconnect the battery and with someone watching the starter positives try to start the car. You may also have to check fuses in other locations to see if they have blown. Do not just visually check any fuse you must use a meter as I have come across several that looked ok but were indeed blown.
