Starting problem bhc diesel

The saga continues 40 k only and still has issues it can be cold or hot it doesn’t matter most if time fires straight away but once twice a week it just turns over but doesn’t fire it will if you hold key turn over and over and it will fire up after a say 15 seconds of continues starter turning ..there is no rhyme nor reason when this happens ..
Fuel filter checked sealed ..cam sensor and crankshaft sensor ..
HELP ...I wished we had not sold our old one to Aluminium on here that gave us 9 years perfect 100% reliability..
Just went for a low mile example thinking we were doing right thing ?.

I would have suggested cam sensor... You may have checked already but there is an earth strap behind the passenger side headlamp, the connector between the bolt and actual body can 'furr' up and give symptoms such as what you describe. You probably won't be able to tell from visual inspection however it would be another check done if you undo the bolt and clear up the connector and chassis point perhaps with a wire brush then re-fit the bolt.

Coat it with WD40 or similar a short while prior to attempting removal though as it can be tough to break free (you don't really want to break it)

Sounds a similar scenario to my brother in laws tdi. His car seems better when the fuel tank is full and the car pointing nose down when parked overnight - suggesting a loss of fuel pump prime, but even with those 'safeguards' it randomly won't start without ultra long cranking times.
An independent VAG specialist was convinced the cause was a 'weak' tandem pump so that was replaced but it made no difference.
The usual culprit is a cracked plastic fuel filter housing but that's been checked.
Other 'theories' are a restriction in the fuel tank sender unit fuel galleries and small air leaks in the fuel lines between the tank and tandem pump

I've been looking for a 'scrap' tank sender unit to cut open to check out potential issues and also need to make some blanking plugs to cap off the lines at the tank so they can be pressure tested via a tapping in the tandem pump body

Cheers Spike

I’ve started having this problem with my TDi, the camshaft sensor was changed six months ago & the problem went away, but reappeared on Tuesday after the battery was removed & replaced after charging.

I’ve just had the glow plugs replaced they had all failed & it was only struggling to start when it was cold, but it’s stsrted doing it again now from hot just as the glow plugs were replaced.

I’m going to check the Earth strap, I put a temporary Earth strap on 9 years ago when I got the car because it would die even when driving & that’s been good for ages.

I’ll update when I know more.

Thanks all ..seems like this is not just an isolated problem ..keep the ideas coming ..my car has been down the local garage for weeks on and off after buying it started and drove fine ..but then I got the local garage to do full service Cambelt waterpump air &fuel & pollen filters brake discs pads oil and filter etc and after having it back 48hrs this started happening..frustrating I’m thoroughly pi##ed off with it ..

I had a starting problem that plagued me for ages. Turned out to be a blocked breather tube. Every time the engine was stopped a slight vacuum would build up in the tank.
Crack the fuel cap and see if it makes any difference
I could see it maybe but I can leave this car overnight and it will do it ..or you could drive it for a couple of days fill up with diesel go to start it and .,b****r it does it again totally random ..

The new white one is doing the same, Timmus was at mine on Saturday and after doing a scan and finding no faults he said it could be fuel problems. Once the car is running it purrs along great. I'm going to start from the tandem pump hoses and work back to the fuel tank.

Mine was really struggling to start yesterday, it was getting low on fuel, I filled it up last night & today, no problem starting, it does turn over a couple of times more than it used to, but it’s fine. I’ll see how it goes over the next week or so.

My TDi 75 has a similar but different problem, but it only happens when the engine is warm, not hot or cold. If I drive about 3 miles, park for 10 mins and try to restart it can be verry difficult if not impossible until it has cooled further. There are no ECU faults.

That could be the early stages of a failing crankshaft speed sensor

Well I suppose that’s a possibility with mine but nothing showing up on scan my mate changed the whole filter housing for new one last night so he’s running round in it to see if that’s gonna fix it ..for the Cost I May do crank sensor if this doesn’t work ..

My recollection is a failing crank sensor does not normally flag a fault code in the ecu
Once it fails more it will do but early signs of failure seem to not log a code

For the cost I think this is my next step ..I have heard probs with the ecu itself I suppose that could be another swap for second hand one but I realise immobiliser would not work but central locking etc would still be ok yes ?? ...what a saga ?

I have only ever seen one EDC15 ECU fail, and that was a total failure, particularly on the A2 where the ECU is in a nice warm dry area as against under the bonnet in the cold / hot / damp conditions

Right Paul so knock that idea on the head ..running out of possibilities ..I don’t want to part with it ..but worse case scenario I could always sell on to a none a2oc buyer ..but at £4500 so far not a cheap car yes 40k low miles fingers crossed it will sort .
