Hi everyone,

just wondering if someone has installed steel braided brake line on their A2 and has good ordering informations (manufacturer, part number, place to get from,...). My A2 is the TDI 90 Hp, 2004.
Thanks in advance for any infos.

Hi Didier
This was discussed on the forum some time ago. The only company I could find who sold braided hose kits for the A2 was ABT Tuning. Unfortunately these kits don't appear to have a good reputation in Germany. Also, general opinion was that braided hoses would give minimal improvement in braking performance unless the standard hoses had deteriorated with age.

The best known manufacturer - Goodridge, supply kits for many cars and bikes but dont have anything listed for our cars. If you can find a local agent they could probably make a custom kit for you

Steel braided lines

Spike,

Thanks for the reply and link.

Just found this thread - did anything come of it? Is anyone making or running with braided brake hoses on the A2?

Hi Dan
I'm not aware of anyone following this up but as many of our cars are approaching their 10th birthday, maybe its time to start looking.
Stealth Racing are a Goodridge agent and they have A2's on site so I think they should be our first port of call. There are no standard kits so it would have to be a custom set - plated steel fittings are standard but stainless is an option. If there is enough interest, a group buy may help us get the best price.

Any volunteers to start the ball rolling

Cheers Spike

When I did the big brake upgrade on Tank, I fitted TT calipers and discs and also braided lines with stainless fittings that were intended for the TT.

Length wise, they're virtually identical to the old rubber hoses I removed, so I'd suggest that a TT kit (fronts) would bolt straight on to a standard A2.

The kit I used was this one:

Although I can't recall whether it was from this seller, I know that the Hel kit has performed flawlessly.

I'm looking for a kit brake lines in Italy but until now nothing. One possibility is to have them built by a craftsman mechanic (I'm not sure that in English you say so).

Brake lines for the 3 cylinder TT are listed as being 560mm long, the ones for the A2 are 510mm.

So, any Mk1 TT brake line kit will be pretty much perfect for a replacement on the fronts of your A2s. The banjo bolts are the same size as are the screws that attach to the metal lines.

Cheers,

Mike

Mike, thanks for the suggestion of using TT front lines. Everyone seems to sell kits which include the rears though, so this makes it a bit expensive.

I called Stealth about a custom set for A2's but they could not help. They find dealing with Goodridge 'difficult' so building up special kits for our cars was not an option.

Cheers Spike

I know what you're saying Spike, but at £55 it's actually about a tenner cheaper than getting 2 new rubber hoses from Audi.

If your brake lines are going, it makes sense to put braided lines on and I think that this is £55 well spent.

Cheers,

Mike

PS Goodridge are not that good to deal with, which is why other manufacturers such as Hel have sprung up. Motorcycle shops used to make up lines to order, but with the advent of standardised kits, they have mostly stopped this now, as it's too much hassle and the quality of factory made kits is far better (they can swage the fittings a lot better at the factory).

Been chatting with Awesome Al today and I think he'll be along later with a possible solution to members who want to upgrade to braided steel lines.

Thanks for the little introduction Mike :)

I’ve had a look into the Brake hoses and it looks like the best priced option will be the Goodridge ones rather than us making up a batch in house.

We weighed up the Mk4 Golf GTI hoses against the A2 that we have got in the workshop and they just weren’t quite long enough.

After a little bit of digging we found that the next one up was the Mk5 GTI Hoses. Now these are even better as they have the metal clip ring around the middle of the hose (which is moveable) and are a slight bit longer than the standard A2 Hoses!

Now these are £32.50 + VAT (£38.19 inc VAT) for the Braded hoses with the Nickel plated ends, or if people wanted the Stainless ends, we could do them for £38.50 + VAT (£45.24 inc VAT).

This is just for the Two front brake hoses as I mentioned to Mike, the rears are braded as standard due to axle movement so you won't really need to replace them!

These Goodridge hoses seem as if they'll be a slightly cheaper alternative than the original VAG supplied brake hoses and much better quality than standard too.

I have one set of the Braded hoses with Nickel plated ends on the shelf ready to go if anyone iminnantly after an upgrade, the hoses with the Stainless ends would be about a week to a week and a half for delivery from date of order.

Let me know what you guys think!
Cheers, AL.

Marvelous news - I will be placing an order for the stainless hoses with you shortly :)

Love this forum :D

Good thinking Mike and thanks to Awesome GTI for coming up with braided front hoses for the A2.

Cheers Spike

A quick photo showing the actual hoses.

They are 57cm long between the fittings just incase anyone wants to know :)

No, they'll be just fine - I've had lines like this (same length) fitted for a year now and they're great.

Cheers,

Mike
