Steering fault

Here is the manual page for the level...

Please drop level back down to maximum cold. There is a reason they give maximum levels on dip sticks......
I would have removed some if I could have found an easy way. Fortunately I just discovered a pipette so that‘ll do the job tomorrow. I know this is a no-no for oil but somehow imagined in the power steering it might not have mattered so much?

Sealed system with just the air space at the top of the reservoir, too much pressure will damage seals etc.

Although there are molded lines on the reservoir DO NOT USE these for the level. The cap / dipstick MUST be used.

yes I saw them, though the reservoir’s so tucked away I couldn’t have read the level from them anyway, so I’ll definitely use the “approved” method once the weather’s died down a bit…

I’m not necessarily disagreeing with you but if it’s truly a sealed system I’d have thought the reservoir would be closed with something more sturdy than a plastic screw cap?

Should only be return"pressure" in the reservoir so plastic more than suitable, after all it is an all plastic cap on the coolant expansion tank.

Not that you want to use them, shine a torch where the cap fits and you can see the fluid from outside the reservoir.

A syringe or even just a length of hollow plastic tube can be used to remove the excess.

yes I saw the YouTube video showing draining it with a syringe. Unfortunately don’t have one handy but got a long pipette which should do the job.

Just a length of hollow tube dipped in the reservoir then your finger placed over the end to seal it is sufficient to remove excess fluid although slower than syringe etc.

Have used a straw from that well known burger establishment before to remove excess fluid. Just drink the beverage first....

I generally try and steer clear of that well known burger establishment and even this wouldn’t be sufficient excuse to go ?

"Steer clear" -yes.

Just giving an example of what else could be used to drain off the excess fluid.

My few cents:
- suck out and replace the most of the fluid that you can, since you already have 1l of fluid
- for others: genuine VAG power steering fluid costs 2 GBP more. I would (well, I actually did) get that one. Especially if you just top it up. Part nr.: G004000M2

I would have thought the cap will have a breather built in to avoid a vacumm so excess oil would be discharged without harm

Infact some cars like peugeots if you turn the steering with front wheels off the ground and engine off, quick enough it makes quite a slodge!

Drew off the excess this morning with a pipette. On closer inspection there was a little pin-hole in the cap which I imagine is a breather, so don’t think it’s a closed system after all - sorry should have taken a photo. Still, the manual was very explicit so best I don’t over-fill it.

As it's a reservoir, it will have a breather hole, large enough for air to move in and out. It will take a lot longer for the same volume of oil to pass through, hence the need for caution.

All the recurring Loss of Power Steering and Power Steering Amber Warning Lamp Fault on our A2 were due to a Bad Connection on the Power Steering Pump. Initially identified and fixed by Timmus. Fault returned at a later date but was then sorted by Harper’s Cumbria ( Carlisle ) when it was in for a Service.
