Crap.....

Hi Guys, Not sure if this is the right place to mention this but im getting edgy...I turned my belowed A2 on thismorning to go to work, as I turned the wheel at slow speed a knocking/notching/rachet sound can be heard. At first I thought it was just the tires sticking to the floor and jumping abit but I've just got in it to go pick up some lunch and its def somthing very wrong. Any Ideas>? Pump?

Cheers Guys,

Probably could do with being in a new thread this one.

If you're under warranty, get down to the dealer double quick. I would also try to get someone with VAG-COM to give you a scan to see if anything is showing so that you can go armed as it were.

If there is a lot of stiffness, it's likely to be the pump, otherwise it could be anything in the steering column, possibly even something as simple as a stone lodged somewhere it shouldn;t be.

Best of British!

if the noise occurs only when the car is moving, it could be CV joint/wheel bearing related.

if it happens when you steer, whilst the car is stationary, it's unlikely to be something rotational in the wheels, but rather (as you suspect) steering mechanism related.

pay close attention to the level of power assistance, and also note if it occurs when putting on lock in both directions - as well as the point above about whether the car is moving (or not) at the time.

Cheers Guys,

Sorry Skip,
Not privilaged with the Vag-ness.

Sorry Gjp33,
I have noted symptoms its happens both ways with the A2 stationary.

S.A.C,
I have had the Anti Roll bar + Brushes done under warranty! I suspect it must be pump after reading back on some posts.

It definatly feels rachety, noise is about every 1/4 turn. Rang up Audi garage today who have just taken £400 quid (in march) for my 40,000 mile service and the lady suggested that they will "bring it in for a quick look and check the fluid level"....I will be mad if this is it as it should have been checked and filled under the service? The best I can describe the noise is that it sounds an empty clunk. The earliest time Audi can see me is next Tuesday....fantastic.

Any Other suggestions do we think? I might check the fluid level myself?

Cheers Guys,

If you can, get someone to put their ear to each wheel to see if they can pinpoint the source of the sound.

I had a really worrying clunking metallic noise on my last A2 - turned out to be a stone caught in the brake disc shroud!

I suggest you just take it to the dealer and ask someone to look at it while you wait. thats what i have done in the past they wont be able to fix it but at least they can illiminate a few things. think waiting until tuesday is not really acceptable espeacialy after paying all that money for a service last month

No progress

Well guys no change so far....got up to nip into work on Sat was done by 9:20ish so decided to pop along to Audi premature to my Tuesday appointment for inital check. Was greeted by service department who told me there was no Master Tech's in/free today and only the "master tech's" can diagnose initial faults or sit in you car on a road test. So looks like il be down the Audi garage on Tuesday @ 8am for said "Master Tech" to kick all 4 tyres turn the steering wheel one revolution either way and listen every 1/4 to hear that somthing is clearly f*****.....then he has to book me in for repair....then wait for a slot with a courtesy car available. Go Audi! Go! All this efficiency still gets me late in for work.

I've posted same post in 2 threads if one of guys want to delete where appropriate I wasnt sure to keep to posting on one thread when theres alot of good info on the older one.

Cheers.
