Steering wheels

Car has a 4-spoke black leather one and its pretty gammy tbh, very worn.
What are my options? What is a direct swap? Any wheel re-covering folk in the club?

Well, if you're willing to fork out, you've loads of choice.

Main area to be aware of is going for a single stage airbag system. You can modify a dual stage system, but it's not guaranteed to work with the single stage controller in the A2 and there's only one way to know for sure, and it'll make a mess in the cabin!

I've had a TT Mk2 flat bottomed MFSW (multifunction steering wheel) for many years and have just refreshed to a 2019 A1 MFSW. There's plenty of choicest all depends on budget. Physically, they'll all fit the steering column as Audi have kept the same fixing design over the last 30-odd years, but you'll need to ensure airbag works as even the ones with the single stage deployment system will have different plugs from what is needed on our A2s.

Talk nicely to A2 Steve or clackers, and go for a sport three spoke, a lot nicer in feel methinks.

Best of luck with the project, following with interest having got the tee shirt. A wanted ad on here wouldn't hurt. Replacement wheel much better price wise than recovering. Good trimmers tend to charge about £100.00 per hour.

Here's a previous wheel - the old TT flat bottom number. Now quite shiny and slippy, so I've recently added this:

2019 A1 MFSW. Yet to hook up the buttons, but with an aftermarket radio in place of my RNS-E, it's not a priority. Bag works though and feels nice and chunky in the hand.

The main issue with offering advice on steering wheel compatibility and retrofitting is around the airbag re-wiring. It's a very contentious subject and one that shouldn't be tackled by the average layman. I've been handling them for years and even I take a deep breath every time I get hands on with them.

What is the part number for the flat steering wheel please? I would love to replace the bog standard SE one.
Thanks

You'll need to be absolutely clear about which particular 'flat' steering wheel you are talking about. Once you know that, you can look up the wheel concerned on 7zap to find the part number.

Morning,

Are you able to add a picture of what you’re after as there are a few options for the Flat Bottomed Steering Wheel.

Here’s an example of a customised Sport Steering Wheel:

Factory versions of these do exist but can be difficult to find. There are eBay sellers who offer a service to customise you round Sport Steering Wheel to look like the image above.

What most members seem to do is go for a Flat Bottomed Multifunction Steering Wheel where there are a few variations available.

Here is what used to be retrofitted before Audi released the more recent style. It’s mainly from the TT and the S3 8P possibly more as I’m no expert on this:

The more common (recent) type you will have seen fitted into A2’s will have come from iterations like the A3, A5 and RS versions etcetera like the below picture:

There are other newer options available but they have their own compatibility issue to overcome.

To be honest most steering wheels will fit, it’s the airbag compatibility where things can be difficult to comprehend and you will stray into unknown territory. Also as the A2 was never available with this style of MFSW then there is no such ‘off the shelf’ airbag harness/loom to use and therefore some soldering may well be in involved, certainly not for the faint hearted as playing with airbags can be very dangerous and the adaption/modification of these safety critical items will not be discussed on the Clubs pages.

Most members who have an upgraded Steering Wheel would have had it retrofitted by someone like Tom @timmus or Hazzydayz and may not know there actual part number of what they have fitted. Also they will probably not know the corresponding airbag part number along with how it’s integrated into the Slip Ring. For this reason, not everyone will be able to assist with part numbers but if you dedicate a few hours online research you should end up in a position to answer your own questions. Answers are out there so don't give up.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks Tom for a brilliant detailed feedback much appreciated. I think the first one in your post will be far too beefy imho for a basic car like A2 unless one upgrades the fronts seats to s3 or TT seats. I do like the second two not too chunky.

No problems and always happy to help,

If you follow the HazzyDayz link, scroll
down and select A2; you see that they charge £1150+VAT.

I know Tom @timmus doesn’t really advertise any form of price list but quite sure he could supply and fit for slightly less, have a chat with him.

When I’ve purchased these sorts of items recently, I’ve paid under £200 for absolutely everything involved in the retrofit but this was for a round A1 MFSW. The FB variant was about £100 more.

There are 2 FBMFSW (same as the last picture) on eBay complete with correct airbags for £400. They will both require the correct buttons to interact with a RNS-E. I did put a cheeky offer on both but the sellers will not go below £380 so walked away as I’m not wanting to spend much more on the OEM A2.

Have a look about as there was one on Gumtree a couple of months ago for £300. I also know of one that sold on eBay for £150 with correct airbag and buttons, astonishing price!

Keep your eyes peeled as deals do come up for the early bird.

Kind regards,

Tom
