Stolen Silver MT02 KDJ

I really hope you manage to track the car down and it was just desperate opportunistic thiefs and not a specific A2 Votex targeted theft as this wasn't that far from my doorstep 😱

An update. No news of my A2 and the insurance company have deemed it a total loss.

Please do let me know if a shiny votex appears, or heated leather. Or a pretty silver on TT Ronal alloys.

Payout was £750 so if anyone thinks Market Value for their A2s going to be fair then you are wrong. Better get an agreed value policy sharpish.

I'm really sad for your loss here - the payout is just an insult.

For the rest of us, unless your A2 is a "beater", please do follow the advice given here and get an agreed-value, full-comprehensive cover policy. If I can get one with business use on a modified example, then you can get one easily too from a much wider selection of providers (so far only Adrian Flux have provided a decent quote so that's who I'm with).

Absolutely gutted for you mate I can only imagine how you're feeling 😒

I'll certainly keep my eyes peeled for anything popping up for sale in the area and there's still a slim chance it may be found abandoned somewhere 🤞

I still find in hard to believe that a A2 would be a targeted theft and not just an opportunistic one but since reading your post I've upped the security on my cars just to be on the safe side.

Sorry to hear this.
Never accept their first offer when dealing with insurance companies!
Probably too late now but always best to go back with some examples of cars that are for sale on Autotrader/Gumtree/Facebook or on the forum to demonstrate that that it's going to cost more to replace.
I hope you can find something suitable, £750 might just be enough for the Votex 🥲

That is scandalous. Really sorry to hear of your experience. Please let me know the insurer (by pm if need be!) so I can definitely avoid!!!

Hello.

I did contact the insurer’s engineering total loss team to argue the price but they said they were bound by the pricing provided by their system.

I’m planning to contact the ombudsman to raise an issue as the car is over 20 years old and pricing is poor for cars that age - especially modern classics with restoration.

I’ve gotten a nice little A3 for now but it’s a bit mundane and uninteresting honestly…

I have ordered a couple of trackers and tags and various bits and bobs for security as well as installed CCTV now. Not too expensive and I think it’s worth it for the peace of mind. Not again!

so so sorry to read the outcome of this sorry tail, I'm gutted for you and £750 is justa slap in the face
Do please name the insurance company as I for one will be avoiding them
We ALL need to keep out eyes open for parts or the full car (most likely parts) coming up for sale on the using places gumtree / bookface etc

The problem is the book value of our cars is based a very small sample of trade sales, many of which are little more than bangers.
It would be a big help if we could create and maintain a database of sales, including within the club, by model version, and spec. This could be used to provide a fact based book value.
I have no idea how this would be done, but we would all, potentially benefit if it could be.
Mac.

An update - the remains of my car have been found by the police. In Shettleston - Torphin crescent. A not-great area less than two miles from my home. It seems likely it was just a crime of opportunity.

According to the police the local kids have vandalised and ‘had their fun’ with the vehicle after it was abandoned so they said it’s in a sorry state.

I did complain to the insurer (Sheila’s wheels)and they increased the valuation to £1,580 - still a slap in the face but a bit better so, unfortunately, I sent the spare key away on Thursday!

A sad story but maybe a cheap Votex in silver will shortly be on Copart with heated leather seats… maybe I’ll try and buy it back myself if I can get the money together.

Thank you everyone for your words of support. Hopefully I’ll be back at some point.

Alex.

Closure but not good news. Was the car already recovered or could you go and see it and perhaps at least get the votex off it?

If it does go to Copart they will want far more than you could have bought it back for directly.

The insurance company were very clear that I no longer own the car. They do. So no option to go and snaffle bits - legally anyway.

On the bright side, all the Police costs for recovery and storage for forensics and so on will be going to the insurance company and not me so there’s a small bright side there.

I’m now in a 2017 A3 sportback which my wife can also drive (automatic) - which is handy because Mercedes still haven’t replaced her locks and keys… so another fortunate outcome in a bad situation.

I’m keeping my eye on Copart and used sales though.

Is it in the insurance company's Ts & Cs that they get ownership automatically, if the car is a write off?
I must read mine ...
Mac.

Just insured my budget banger 02 tdi, esure put a value of £2395 but weather they would pay that is another matter!

If the car is written off & the insurance company pay you off, they then own the car and 9 out of 10 it ends up in Copart auction, you can ask to buy the car back, some let you have it for as little as a couple of hundred pounds in terms of an A2 to save Copart collection & fees etc.

So, you do have to accept their offer, and then, and only then, do they become the owner.
If you don't accept, who has the final say?
Mac.

Mac, once you have done all the bartering, arguing etc and have accepted their offer, you can ask them to buy the car back, in fact during the bartering & arguing about the payment you can mention, you would like the car back.
I did this 45 years ago with a MG Midget that I had, told them it has sentimental value, I was only 18 then :) those days it was called Universal Salvage Auctions, now taken over by Copart.
I had a case where they sent Copart to pick the car up from my customer before any settlement was made, He told them to get lost & they did.
Copart are the biggest crooks & well in with British car insurers.
