Strange transmission noise

Straight to the point.

Whenever its a cold morning, (I've had to scrape frost/ice from the car) I get in start the car up, then proceed to scrape all the windows.

I then get in to drive off and put the rear heated screen and the climate on.

I drive off and all is fine, working my way out of my estate at slow speed, when I turn out onto the main road and accelarate there is a very strange noise that comes from the engine. It sounds like I'm dragging something along/or that something is caught and brushing when the wheel rotates. I don't get any feedback through the steering wheel.

It sounds like a loud vibration.

It only does it when its cold and the noise goes away after about 2/3 minutes.

Anyone any ideas, it doesn't appear to effecting the economy, it has dropped but I put this down to the cold weather and the usual engine warming for this time of year. It gets up to temperature fine, no longer than usual

Any ideas anyone?

If you don't reply in 5 minutes I will have a rant:D

I tried to record the sound this morning but my phone will not pick it up on the voice recorder.

I will try again tommorow on the way to work

Have you got a pre-2003 diesel (i.e., one which has a webasto heater?)

Yes I do its not the Webasto making the noise.

I managed to record it, (not very well) but you can hear the noise.

I apolgise in advance for the muffled swear-words about 20 seconds in. Some guy in a white van jumped the lights and nearly ran into me.

If people can't make out the noise, its just before a change up, and is a distinct noise.

I'm thinking it maybe the EGR valve, as it didn't do it for the first time this morning, and the temperature was higher ie 12 degrees.

Do I need the EGR valve replacing or is it something I can live with
