Joga - Azure blue is a nice colour! (but this one is not for rainy days ?)
Unfortunately, there is no space to keep a nest egg, so it will be sold when repaired. 🙂👍

The first owner from Andover kept the car well maintained from 2002-2018 so it would be great to see this treasure back on the map. I contacted the first owner and they do not want to buy the car once it has been repaired

I washed the car yesterday evening and took pictures this morning.

It requires clay bar to remove fallout. Then T cut and turtle wax.
Headlights need attention
The car looks OK to me. Good luck with the engine, it looks too.
I use Auto Balm polish, from Bilt-Hamber. It's designed for older cars.
It is very good, IMO. I'm not into concours, just look nice, and bead well.
It's very easy to apply as well, apply with an application sponge, then buff. That it.
Mac.

As has been said, the car is way to good to break. Fingers crossed the Polo BBY engine gets the car back on the road and in rude health, thats what i think we would all like to see. I wouldn't mind betting if the car was clayed machine polished with the right products it would look minty, impressive and be the apple of someones eye for sure. I've not long got Cobalt Blue back on the road after 6 1/2 years treating her to all manor of nice and shiny new parts. Fitting the new oil separator has solved oil consumption problem having now travelled 3k miles and seeing negledgible oil used. The car drives beautifully now, no problem pulling off from rest you often hear people mention, and it just pulls well from 1,500 rpms upwards on a light throttle. Love a well cared for 1.4 BBY A2, yours too will be before long.

I second the suggestion to clay bar then machine polish. Two stage then I would wax.
However that doesn't help @rotifer II if he doesn’t have a machine polisher. I would clay then wax if I didn’t have a machine.

The brand I will be using for the car paint job is Bilt-Hamber. To try, I purchased the auto balm polish and cleanser polish. The medium clay bar, which I have previously used.
🙂👍

EDIT
Have no machine polishing equipment.

For the car paintwork I'll be using one brand, Bilt-Hamber. I've bought the medium clay bar, which I have used in the past, the auto balm polish and cleanser polish to trial.
🙂👍

EDIT
Don't own a machine polisher
For Auto Balm, BH don't recommend using a machine. It's very easy to apply and buff.

Collecting the engine this morning. I'll update you on how I get on when I arrive home safely.
No sign of storm Darragh in Huddersfield yet.

For Auto Balm, BH don't recommend using a machine. It's very easy to apply and buff.
Cheers @PlasticMac

EDIT
Made it home....

I'm not using the hoist this time. Should be possible to fit it with ratchet straps, cardboard and chocks of wood.

Should I sell the car once I fit the engine? (And it runs)
But without an MOT, so its a 'mini project' for the next owner?

PRO's and CON's

No mot usually dramatically reduces your customer base and can effect the price with some devastation. For me when I was sold a pup it was either scrap/break it or fix it and get it up to scratch. Trouble here is your "in" to it already close to its resale value without a test plus you need to change the engine.
A trap I found myself in. Must have about £1300 in Mr Grey now and that's what I would likely get for it on a good day. On the plus side it's had most of the involved stuff done, 104k engine, clutch, gearbox (MZK) timing Belt and front shocks plus fresh MOT.
For me if your not going to MOT it I would stop now and see if you can recover your costs upto now
