Symphony 1 to Symphony 2 upgrade?

I've just bought a A2 1.4 TDi SE and was wondering if it's possible to upgrade the Symphony stereo to a Symphony 2. They seem to be going quite cheap on Ebay. Are they exactly the same size? It looks like the Symphony 2 has tapered edges so might not fit?

Thanks

Mark

Do remember that although the names are constant across the Audi Range the shapes and fittings are not. ie. A symph from an A4 probably won't fit in an A2....

PaddyS (if you do get it to work let me know as I am in the same situation)

Hi markross
Welcome to the A2oc
Check out the attached web site. There is a 4.7 meg download on this conversion

Paddys is correct in saying that only the A2 specific Symphony unit will fit although you could cut dowm an A6 version if your brave

Although written around other Audi models, the above link explains there are significant differences in the wiring between Symphony 1 and II. Once this is sorted then i'm fairly certain it will just be a case of slotting in the SymphonyII head unit without any dash changes.
For anyone considering buying off e.bay, despite what the ads say, every Audi radio and sat nav unit has a different shape facia plate to suit the hole in the dash so only original A2 parts will fit. (Most A2 part numbers start with 8Z)
Also note the A2 dashboard cannot be converted from a single DIN to double DIN like other models. You need a whole new dash at £600+
Hope this helps

Ok I've managed to acquire a brand new A2 Symphony 2 off ebay. However I am now looking in detail at the installation instructions posted by Spike above and it seems a lot more complicated that I first thought. They recommend purchasing the terminal extractor tools. However these are listed at $200 for the 2 tools! I can't really afford that, so I am wondering how easy it would be to perform this install without the tools? I am concerned about damaging the wiring and ending up with no radio at all!

Also the instructions seem to be for an A6 - will it be the same for an A2? I'm not very technical at all and it all seems at bit over my head!

What kind of price would I be looking at for getting it installed professionally?

Thanks!

Mark

What did you have in there before Mark? If you're near to Manchester, I would be happy to fit it for you - having done an RNS-E conversion (including a dash swap), several iPod installs and loads of cruise retro-fits, I think my credentials are ok.

Hi Mark

My advice would be to take up Skipton's offer. There is probably no one else in the country who is more capable of doing the Symphony 1 to Symphony 2 conversion - and it won't be expensive either. If you have ever considered cruise control, this would also be the ideal time for a retrofit

Regarding the 'terminal extractor tools', Laser have just brought one out and it's under £10 - see link attached. Not sure of it covers both pin types though.

Hi Spike - thanks for the recommendation!

I saw the ad for the new Laser terminal tool in Audi Driver last month, but it appears to only work on 1 specific size of pin - it won't be of use in a radio install as there are 2 types (1 in the power and speaker blocks and another smaller type in the 20-pin mini-ISO block).

Mike

Hi Mark,

No problems - I'm certainly in no rush at the moment and will only be too pleased to help you where I can. It's a pity that most of my work on Audis is limited to electrical stuff, otherwise I'd love to be able to help you out with the head-gasket problems too.

Take is easy with that right foot!

Just received the stereo in the post. There's no markings on it to suggest it's a Symphony II (rather than Symphony I) - is there any way I can verify this before I leave Ebay feedback for the seller?

If the unit has a matt black/dark grey colour, it is a Symphony 2, if ita a semi-shiny black, it's a Symphony 1

There are more detailed ways, but that is the obvious one.

Mike

What's the part number on it?

Let me know and I'll tell you what it is.

Cheers,
Mike

It's 8Z0 035 195 CX. But looking at the photos in the gallery it appears that this is the Symphony I as the front of the Symphony II is very different to the one I have! Think I will be contacting the seller for a refund...

That part number is unknown to ETKA or ETOS (and I have the latest incarnations of each) - I think you're right to get a refund.

There are at least 2 Symphony 2s on Ebay at the moment, so you shouldn't have much trouble getting hold of one.

Cheers,

Mike
