Tailgate Catch Not Working

Has anyone else had a similar problem? I unlocked the car using the main control on the fob, opened the tailgate to place my case in the boot but when I tried to cloes the tailgate it just bounced. I tried moving the car in case the ground wasn't level but still the tailgate just bounces. The catch in the tailgate itself rotates 90 degrees or so but it won't lock in place. The central locking will lock and unlock all the other doors but the infra red sensor doesn't activate (I'm assuming that's beacuse the boot isn't showing as being closed). Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks in advance.

You can check if it will lock while its open by using a screwdriver as the striker-pin, push the lock part closed and see if it locks

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I'll strip the trim panel off a la Spike's diagram and see what I can see.

Best wishes

Did you fix this problem? If so which of the suggested fixes worked? I have lived with this problem for a good 5 years.

Thanks

For anyone else suffering my work around has been to apply some gentle support via the rear wing thing just as the latch strikes. Bounce prevented, hatch closed.

As someone above suggested it may be the hoop which the lock strikes and grabs hold off (should do). On our previous car (VW Bora) the hoop was mounted on a metal plate and the plate was held in place by two screws/bolts. These had become loose allowing the metal plate to move out of the way so whenever the boot was shut the lock didn't grab the hoop.
You can test this by grabbing hold of the hoop with your finger and pulling it hard up or sideways - it shouldn't move, if it does it needs securing back in place by tightening up the screws/bolts (making sure it's back 'up' into position first).
I was able to use an ikea type allen key to tighten the bolts on the Bora (you can press down the flap which surrounds the hoop to aid access) so didn't actually need to remove any trim in the end but it might be different on the A2.

It sounds like either the Latch around £26 or check this first; strip boot cover off make sure no wires are off the solenoid that works the boot release.
Mine froze last winter, stripped it,dried off, lots of WD40 and no hassle since.
If your looking at back of car from rear its on the left hand side of the number plate, little wonder it froze.
when pressing the boot release you should hear the solenoid opening and closing as you hold and release.

Having suffered this problem for a good 5 years the fix took just a few minutes. At either side of the tail gate is a bump stop secured by a T30 screw. I loosened these off and moved both bump stops forward by just 1 mm. Sorted!

Tailgate catch

Hi

I had this problem with my TDI 2001 it was a sticky tail gate solenoid
fed up with working intermittently,so I changed the solenoid about £17
from Audi stealer and did the job in about 20 mins.Works a treat now
never anymore problems.I tried the bump stops and catches to no avail
it was my solenoid all along.

Best Regards : Robbo

I Had the same problem when i 1st got my A2 ..
I just got the wd40 out
sprayed the solenoid contact and catch
and its still working ok 5 years later

I Think you need the long straw to get to it
and have a cloth handy for the overspray .....
