Chat Tailgate release / lock motor - Confused !!!

HI,

Our Daughter's tail gate release motor was slowing down for a wile and now has more or less given up the ghost!

So I managed to source a used one to try.

The strange thing is that when I took the rear panel off I could plainly see that the original motor was different (Smaller and a different shape, with a side power connector).

But after looking closer I could see that the black plastic mounting plate has the spare holes for the other style of motor. So I thought great, it does fit after all, and it did.

BUT for some strange reason the replacement motor was pushing instead of pulling and so didn't move.

I dismantled both and the only way that the replacement one would work was if the motor turned in the opposite direction.

So there was no way that I could resolve the problem, I even looked at the possibility of swapping the electric motor from one to the other, but that was a no no.

I then thought about swapping the wires around to get it to turn in the other direction, but that was a bit scary.

So the end result is probably what I should have done in the first place and that was to go to Audi and buy a new motor (just over £50) but at least I know it would fit and turn in the right direction.

Has anyone else had the same problem?

I,m not saying that ive had a problem with the boot motor Steve but there is a theme here. There have been the odd one or too things that ive bought lately in order to "save money" but in the end ive had to resort to a buying from a dealer - this has in effect cost me more !.

Indeed, there is a lesson there.

But it doesn't apply to all parts, there are many basic, but expensive parts where secondhand is a viable option.

Hi Steve

Send it back to me and I'll refund you if its not suitable for your daughters car. I wasn't aware there were two different boot solenoids.

Absolutely no need for you to do that. You sent me the part I asked for at a great price. I didn't know there were two types either.

So please don't feel that you did anything wrong that is absolutely not the case.

The thread I posted was just to make others aware that there are two types.

So thank you very much for the kind offer, but you did nothing wrong.

Yes I know that Steve, but I really don't mind refunding you. I'll pm you my address so you've got the option.

Thanks for the kind offer but I don't want a refund, the transaction was a fair one and I received the part I asked for!!!

Thanks

Because our daughter said she was quoted nearly £60.

I will have to check it out, she must have tried to order the wrong part.

Hi,

Cars built earlier than May 2001 use an A2 specific lock motor where as later ones switched to using a A4 motor and adaptor plate.

The early A2 part is very expensive compared to the A4 part so its probably that one which was quoted for £60.

As you mentioned that you have the black plastic plate, its probably a later car so you want the A4 part: 8E5 962 115 B. £17 sounds about the right price for one of those.

What's the part number on the motor fitted to the car? The expensive early motor is 8Z0 962 115.

regards

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

thanks for that.
I don't have the part with me so I can't comment on that.

Your explanation seems spot on. (Her's is a 2003).

The thing I find strangest of all is that the two types appear to have opposite polarity. The old version spins and pushes the plunger (or tries to at least). It should be pulling it.
I can only guess that they swapped the feed wires over for the newer version.
