Hi all this is my first post. Both my wife and I have A2s, my wifes is 1.4 tdi 75BHP and is nice and quiet. Mine is a storm 90 BHP and sounds like a tractor! possibly tappet noise. Has anyone else had this problem and wots the fix. Its been back to Audi twice for this problem with no success. Its drivin me mad! please help.

Hi Bobby and welcome to the forum.

I have just replaced my A2 for a newer one and whilst it is the same 75bhp engine IMHO sounds a lot courser. I think it could be that it has lower mileage (31k) compared to my old one (62k) which my father in law now uses and has not settled down!

Also noticed that the starter motor sounds more tinny on the new one as it cranks up.

Tappet

Thank you Foghorn its good to be here. You could have a point about the rattling as my wifes has done more miles than mine, however i am going to check the tappet clearance myself for piece of mind. I am away for the next week in London working but will let you know how I get on when I get back, we may be able to get these beesties a little quieter despite what the agents say!

Tappet

PS Foghorn are you local to the Midlands?
Kind regards

Hi bobby
Not sure if I hav misinterpreted your post but the A2 has hydraulic tappets so its not possible to check the clearances. The most common problem is on start-up. After standing for some time, oil can drain from the tappet cavity and cause severe rattle until oil pressure refills it and takes up the clearances.

Cheers Spike

I'm South Manchester - travel to Surrey on a frequent basis. Be interested to hear how you get on.

Also noticed with my new one there is some vibration through the steering wheel when pulling away and at 1750rpm???

will keep you posted foghorn. Your vibration sounds interesting, there was a recall, something to do with the deisel supply pipes having to be changed, might be worth yourwhile looking in to that, let me know how you get on. Mine had the Mod at the begining of the year, transformed the car.
