My new TDi 90 now has about 500 miles on the clock
On the first half tank I got 47 mpg, mostly town and A road driving
Today I was on the motorway at 70 mph for 250 miles being as light footed as I know how, and the DIS is showing 56 mpg. If it's anything like my Passat was that's optimistic, though I won't know for sure until I fill up.

Aircon, lights, everything extra was off.

I could match that mpg with my 97 Passat TDI under similar circumstances.

Where's my economy? I never expected to get 80 mpg but I'd have thought 60 was on the cards

Is this a running in thing? Again my old car got a few mpg better over time, but not a lot

Otherwise it's a brilliant car, but I'd just hoped to get more than 450 miles from a tank

All I would say is don't believe what Audi (or any other make) tell you.

Work out the mpg with pen and paper-don't trust DIS (my Toyota trip is saying something like 60mpg from a 1.6 petrol-yeah right)

Let the engine loosen up, get settled into it's life.

Still has to be better than a petrol!

My baby 1.4 diesel started at 45mpg and improved to 60+ over the first three months.
These engines are VERY tight when new.
Enjoy the extra horses!

I love your use of the "smilies". But sometimes why do you use what you use?

Have you been sniffing your anti-bac spray?

Maersk, thanks for the reassurance, I shall keep an eye on the first few tanks. When it's run in, what will it do at a steady 70 on the motorway? With a following wind and light foot I could get an indicated 63 or so or a real 58-60 out of a Passat 110 TDI (with 110k miles)
Cheers

Anti-bac is better intravenously rather than sniffed!

Too much makes you [20]
I believe my colleagues would tell you it is due to a warped sense of humour developed over too many years working for HMG.;)

I regularly return 63-66 mpg (genuine pump to pump) at a steady indicated 75 on the motorway.
Lowest was 43.87 during the first 6 months and I have seen 74.6 after a cruise around Wiltshire. Average over three years of ownership is 54.85, with which I am pleased as I do use all of the available oomph most of the time.
28.62 was the three year average for my Alfa GTV in real world termsm and 21 for the BM.
Yeas I am that sad that I keep a log. Its that pilot instilled thing.
The number two Saxo diesel does 56mpg regularly but is non-turbo and is a slug until it girds its loins but then will cruise at three figures all day if THEY would let you.
Stop fleecing and start policing you Westminster leeches [17][14]
I think I had better go lie down and drink some anti-bac.

Mark, I'd echo the comments above. In my experience, you'll see an increase in mpg once the engine loosens up. At 70mph I can achieve about 60mpg and at 60mph that goes up to near 70 mpg.

You need to get a few thousand miles on the clock before being disappointed! At 16,000 miles mine does 45-50mpg on the way to work - 7 miles mainly urban with about 2 miles of dual carriageway on a cold engine, at 4,000 miles this was in the low 40s. Get it on the motorway and you are up to 60 mpg. This is with climate on all the time.

Average 69mpg doing 85+mph on the autobahns from Dusseldorf to Calais - that was fully laden on eco tyres - 1.2TDi of course. 83mpg average in Summer best was 103mpg over 28 mile trek from work.

In winter i loose about 10mpg overall - due to snow tyres (v useful this past week) and longer warm up time

If you want high mpg you will need to go for the 1.2TDI which easyly runs 85mpg at 70mph on longer trips. when I go fast mpg falls. The 1.2TDI has enough power to travel fast and easyly with full load through Germany.
