That looks fantastic ?
Really like the look with the pipe work, is that original just sprayed also? I tip my hat sir ?

Anything special needed to unclip it and remove for painting? Or just unscrew and away you go?
Undo the nuts and go for it. I think the anti vibration mount on the intake pipe may need attention, mine did, but other than that, I got nut covers to tidy things up

The cover is only held on with 2 10mm nuts and captive washers and a 10 mm bolt with washer.

Steve @Birchall,

Apologies for the slight thread deviation over the last few posts regards my own tinkering.

As we now know at least 2 members have had some success in applying something (paint) on top of the factory cover, is it worth looking at something we could adhere on top of what we already have under our bonnet. Along the lines of attaching something from an existing VAG engine cover and making it look like it’s always been there. This would save the cost of getting something fabricated and could look good. Surely something is out there already waiting to be attacked with a Dremel.

There is of course the risk that adding something on top would just look utterly stupid:
Too much???

Ah, Tom, now yer talking! Would just need to record that engine then play it over the throb of our 3 cylinders!

Thank you Graham,

Understood about keeping it flexible. I suppose I need to obtain a new/replacement foam item between the rocker cover and the engine cover before I start to play around.

I think there is a little bit of the foam part towards the back but certainly not complete as I have seen what it’s supposed to look like on 7zap. Next purchase I guess. I remember a thread some time ago stating that they are no longer available but didn’t pay much interest to it back then as I was a BBY user.

Kind regards,

Tom

Pretty sure I’ve got one there Tom.

Ok as discussed earlier in the thread re glass fibre please see video its not actually about an engine cover but everything around it but same principle

Sure but there is some flex in the product & if skimmed over the top of the A2 original cover then it might just give that protection required to stop what's happening to Jellybean & with the foam noise insulation just under might just give that extra protection.

It needs to bend in the middle to fit under the fresh air intake at the back and under the air intake pipe at the front. All the fibre ones split around the tandem pump area. With all the resources Audi had at their disposal when developing and manufacturing the A2, I honestly think had there been an alternative from the VAG group it would have been utilised at the time. The flexing and vibration absorbing properties of the fibre cover was their solution.

One of the reasons that Audi didn’t bother much with making the cover look good was because the theory is that you don’t take the bonnet off normally. So why would they invest in something “pretty” if it would never be seen.

also, the solutions involving exposing the rocker cover mean that you are losing the sound insulation. They are not the quietest engines around. In fact if I am selling an A2 I never start the engine until they are inside the car, if you are not used to the sound of an A2 engine it can put people off.
So I would think that finding a solution that goes over the fibre sound deadening or one that includes some is the way to go.

just my thoughts.

Well the insulation wasn’t cheap... though I’m happy as the old one was in several ruined bits

I had the same thoughts but left it to Steve B to speak up first ;) Because of the noise issue I would personally only buy a replacement if it had more sound insulation, but looking at the photos I get the impression that the air inlet in the bonnet is almost touching the engine cover (to line up with the duct to the inside) so it cannot be made thicker. Can anyone confirm that?

It looks like some insulation could be added to the offside of the engine.

Yes the existing fibre cover is very close to the cabin air inlet. It is also very close along the front edge to the engine air inlet and has to be bent to get past both. The left end looking at the engine has the cam belt, water pump and alternator so not much room there. What gap there is at the top is already filled with the foam insulation. On the right end is the tandem pump, this is the end that the flexing tends to crack / split first. The fibre cover hugs the engine as much as possible for noise and heat insulation so increasing any distances would have a detrimental effect.
