TDi Fuel filter drain plug thread..

Hi,

The other day I got a filter base in good condition (the plastic screw was fine too but I preferred using the "Depronman Screw").
As soon as I can, I'll change the one I'm wearing and it will stay perfect forever.

That looks so nice all new plastic and the polished aluminium screw fitted such a shame that one fitted only the mechanic ever sees it
Did you buy it new and was it just the base or did you have to buy the full filter housing
If just the base how much was it please
Also if you are throwing away the original one with the screw broken in it and turning round would you mind sending it to me as I use the base to test each screw for firmest and being plastic it could start to wear the thread

Your list of jobs must be getting a lot smaller
Cheers.

It's just the base of the filter (I didn't need more). It is of a scrap (breaker shop?) that you can enter and disassemble things yourself. That day I was lucky and they had a modern A2 TDi. That day I bought many things and they didn't charge me that one. When I disassemble the one I carry now I send it to you.

Cheers

Many thanks for that
We had a lot of breakers in the uk that did this years ago now there are very few that will let you get your hands dirty. All part are removed and on a shelf at significantly higher prices that if you remove yourself

Goodmorning everyone. Can someone help me ? I cannot unscrew the cap of the plastic filter holder. I unscrewed the screw to let out any residual water but I can't remove the cap to replace the filter. Is there a procedure to follow? I am afraid of breaking the cap with the socket wrench because I feel it twists but does not unscrew. Thanks Arrigo

At least he now no longer needs Google Translate?
Thanks for the explanation, but it is the one I use only that it does not unscrew and being plastic if I force I am afraid that the cap may break. It must be blocked. I bought the used car and I don't know how long it hasn't been changed. I thought we needed a particular key.

If you are afraid you are going to cause more damage, then I suggest that you remove the whole filter housing from the car. Once off you can then get a better grip on the housing and hopefully remove the cover. Failing that if it gets damaged it is already off the car and a replacement can be swapped straight over. Here is the manual page.....

and the exploded diagram of the filter...

thank you very much for your cooperation. But has it ever happened that it could be blocked because it was too tight? Anyway I will keep you informed thanks again

Never seen one blocked because it was too tight. Seen them too tight because never been replaced.
And once you have gone to all this trouble ( and expense ) it really does make sense to take it to the next level by throwing away the POS plastic drain screw that is designed to fail with the FAR SUPERIOR Paul @depronman metal replacement, just remember to put the seals on it before fitting. So order one from him before you start.

if you look in post 22 there is a picture of the cap that you are trying to remove, there are a pair of lugs near to the outside of the housing, if you make up a tool to attach to these lugs as they are near the outside there will be more purchase on them than the hex nut
a piece of steel strip say 25mm wide and 6mm thick about 500mm long would work well, drill a couple of holes to take 8mm bolts so the bolts will attach to the lugs. I've made a similar tool to hold the crank shaft pully whilst it is untightened and re tightened

There is a rubber O ring that seals the cap

cheers,
Paul

yes echoing Audifan's words, the plastic drain screw really is a rubbish design, even if you end up buying a new filter housing that will come with a new plastic screw I would though the screw in the trash and fit an aluminium one for trouble free operation new and in the future
I have stock of them if you want one, sending to Italy is no problem but I would need to get a postage cost for you

Cheers,
Paul

I have seen someone manage to shear off one of the plastic lugs while trying to remove the cover. Guess what, when the lug fractured off it ripped a hole in the cover!! Up side was the shock of the lug shearing off let the cover ( now useless ) unscrew....

Ha ha that would be double anoying, I've changed dozens of filter on the A2 and never had one that would not come off using my laser line 6 flat socket, but there is always a first time

cheers Paul

An impact gun might help or it may destroy the housing, when pushed its worked for me on various filters but not on an A2
