My 1.4 TDI used a litre of oil in the first 9,000 miles, nothing in the 6000 miles since then

Oil..Interesting fact Orkney at one time had 20% of Brtitains oil production at a time that Britain was pumping like crazy but we also have very nearly the most expensive petrol and deisel in Europe??

I was horrified to discover my A4 110 tdi very short of oil after the 1st 5000miles but that was then and this is now. 100thou and 7 years later and the engine uses next to no oil the turbo makes less of a hisss and it drives faster especially after a new timming belt. These engines do seem to need lots of running in or perhaps bedding in would be a better description. I did think that the 1st oil change should be a bit sooner than specified especially if in a cold climate and /or lots of cold starts.

A taxi driver in bonny Aberdeen, giving me a lift, in his 6cylinder merc deisel insisted that at least once a day you should boot it hard for a few seconds to clear it 'out' and another friend with a 2.5tdi a4 proclaims that it should be treated hard in its early days to get the best out of it!!! sounds a bit queer but who knows.
