TDI top engine cover noise insulation?

Hi all, recently perusing the how to section with a view to eventually pulling the turbo and giving the variable vanes a good clean.
I found a pdf which explains the process of removing the turbo, great!
quick read through and I noticed that on page 5 it says
– Take off engine cover panel -arrows-. (the arrows point to the three nuts securing the cover in place)
Remove noise insulation beneath cover.
Which is weird as I do indeed have an engine cover panel which is secured by three nuts/bolts but underneath there is no noise insulation it's just a fibre board moulding!
Question: Is there actually noise insulation that is missing or is it just the fibre panel?
Your thoughts??

The foam that sits underneath the cover will have gone ages ago, sometimes if any work has been done and they have pulled the foam out they just can't be bothered to put it back, on the other hand it has simply desintergrated, you might find remnants of it stuffed away.

Just thinking of getting a piece of insulation from any old top cover and shaping it to fit.
On second thoughts probably not worth the effort, lots of fire resistant acoustic foam on ebay just need to figure how thick it should be!

Thanks for that Paul @depronman , are there any photo's or drawings that you know of? would be interesting to know what's missing! chances of a second hand one turning up are probably remote but maybe something could be cobbled together?

End of last year I spoke with @CreweAudi about the noise insulation. I was told the cost was £68.00 and they were back order. I asked how long it would take to get one, the answer was do not have an estimated delivery date until one is ordered. Perhaps if enough are interested then could it be a group buy or at least speed up delivery. I am still looking for one myself and have tried several on line national breakers who have checked their stock and possible alternatives ( Polo, Fabia, Lupo etc ) . If they were there the condition was terrible between the weather and I suspect rodents nesting!

I have the moulded foam on mine but I have no idea what is holding it together so am reluctant to move it. Amazing that it is in place anyway seeing as I was missing the engine cover.

I'm in if anybody goes ahead with a bulk buy....anything to help prevent the diesel engine making a "racket".

Nice to know it's still available! @k7aus recently sourced an undertray for less than half the price I could find from TPS, if anyone has a TPS account would it be worth getting a price from them?
There appear to be several part numbers for item 35? I assume it would be 8Z2103954 ? Would the insulation be common between all engine versions? I have an ATL

Believe all part numbers are good as there is no difference in the valve cover between lhd and rhd that I can remember, but yes as it says AMF, BHC, ATL . Only one part number listed for the valve cover or cylinder head cover. 8Z0 normally fits both lhd and rhd, 8Z1 lhd only normally and 8Z2 rhd. Could not find it in TPS nor could I find it in Audi Tradition. Happy for someone to show me I am wrong.

Have found a picture for the insulation fitted to the AMF Fabia, although nowhere near as intricate as the Audi one.

Hmm! I was thinking of having a go with some acoustic foam but it looks a bit more complicated than I thought! I assume it wraps round the sides of the cam cover or does it extend down the cylinder head as well? just took the lid off and there's not a lot of room between the egr and the cam cover! lots of gubbins in the way! original part may be the way to go!

Yes it is a very complicated shape. Audi one even more complicated than the Skoda picture! I believe they are not just for noise but helps the diesel get up to temperature quicker and prevents it cooling down too much in slow traffic especially this time of year.

Has you might be able to make out, the one above has clearly been moved to one side to get to the cam belt cover, I know that because I was there when he did it.
It wraps right around the back towards the turbo area under the scuttle panel and air intake.
