Tdi75 rear springs and shocks - HELP!

Thanks @audifan - I already pulled the trigger on the AUTODOC order. If they are wrong they’ll be taking them back as they argued me on to these Bilsteins.

@damadgeruk ? Which alloys? Audi TT mark 1 Ronal alloys. I’m sure that’s what it says inside them. They came with 205/55 R16 tyres from the TT. I experimented with putting them on but they rubbed a little at the front (also the rear - obviously)

3 variants on rear bilstein springs when I bought mine part numbers are 36-147694. 36-147700. 36-147717.. If you check out springloaded website they are based down in Devon very helpful .
Oh and I used the 36-147717 on both my tdis ..? dead chuffed .

I am on the wrong laptop to just link the files, but the thread where I made my initial uploads is above.

Was just re-reading my comments re the springs used on our 1.4i that have just been replaced following the catastrophic middle failure of one of the Suplex 03207s - these have just been replaced with a pair of Sachs 998404 that have the same notional 8Z0411105AJ specification as the Suplexes.

Based on the parameters quoted, these are 5 arbitrary rate units 'harder' than the Suplex with a 0.1mm thicker wire with all other quoted measurements the same (around 3%), and in an initial drive on the same local roads, I would say this holds true - they feel fractionally crisper, again without being hard or harsh. Ride height seems to be 1cm higher possibly but that is unscientific as they were fitted on Sunday and I've driven them once, and secondly, they are specified the same overall height as the 03207s. I'm assuming the above Suplex fracture was something out of the ordinary being right in the middle rather than the top or bottom end, only done about 6000 miles since they were installed, nowhere near their notional running weight. I would still specify them on a 1.4i mind you as the way they rode and drove on local roads with the light front end was super. The Sachs' are no worse on that measure.

Just to add with the most recent post above - I put appropriate Bilstein B3s (147717 - just found the purchase history) on the rear of my project Tdi car and they were excellent along with B4 shocks - I would definitely use them on Tdis with or without OSS ; cannot comment on them for 1.4i cars.

Suplex 03207 have a 328mm length, whereas Sachs 998404 have a 337mm length. If these figures are correct, then the Sachs 998404 would increase the ride height by 9mm compared to the Suplex 03207.

That would explain it .. in my original files I had the height down as 337 based on copying from the online discount retailers in the interests of speed, but I've just checked with Suplex's own data and they say 328. I've seen variability of information in some of the online places before mind you, so original sources are probably best (but much slower to collate!).

Going back to the original issue above - I would concur that the springs being used there are not as high rate as they should be given that the "passenger" / luggage weight loaded in that photo seems normal for a family holiday.

Well not exactly. Only in case that both springs have same spring rate. If not it can be higher or lower...

Suplex 03207 and Sachs 998404 are both matched to OEM part number 8Z0411105AJ so they should have the same spring rate.

Hi David,

The Bilstein 36147700.

Loaded the car up today with a more reasonable 320kg (including me) - all of it before the rear wheel well and it was still scrubbing out badly and sitting very very low. That’s despite me removing the spare wheel, everything in the boot and subboot and both rear seats

New springs on the way. Ironically I think that’s all my heavy journeys now done.
